ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1) Why had students been marching How was it an unusual march?
Ans: T
he students were walking to give a notice to the Collector, who was a member of the King’s government. Their request was to tell the British to leave India or face problems. It was a strange walk because the students, who were the walkers, moved in full silence as if the police, some in front of them and some on the sides, were not there. After giving the notice, except for shouting once, ‘Mahatma Gandhi ki jai’, they quickly walked back in the same way as they had come.

2) A police officer was seen talking to the student leaders. Can you guess what the officer had been talking to them?

Ans: Really the police officer did not expect this kind of march. He might have thought there would be shouting, slogans and people breaking rules. To handle the crowd they might use their sticks etc. So he went to the students and asked about it. There was little work for them.

3) Babu and Manju were a bit disappointed with the way students were marching. What was the reason?

Ans: The students were fully quiet and they returned calmly. For small children, the meaning of the silent march would not have been clear. They would have thought shouting, police beating, and bloodshed showed bravery and love for the country. So, Babu and Manju felt a little sad with the way the students were marching.

4) What had the police expected about the way of protest? How did the student leaders manage the protest?

Ans: The police thought there would be a big protest against the British. Many people including a teacher were caught. The angry crowd might damage public places. The rebels could do anything and break the peace of others. But the goal of the student leaders was very different. They planned to act more and give more trouble to police. If they got caught quickly, it was of no value. They had to wake people by giving copies of Gandhiji’s speech, etc. So they kept their march very quiet and showed their protest to British rule without violence.

5) What was there in the ‘mysterious parcel’? What suspicion did the police have about that?

Ans: There was a copying machine inside the secret parcel. The senior officer knew about the copying machine and many copies of Mahatma’s speech were spread in that town. They wanted to find out where that machine was, and who were the people doing these works. So they spoke to each other, that night they might enter their house with a search paper.

6) Why had Patil, the sub-inspector come there? Who believed him? What was the result?

Ans: Patil, the police sub-inspector, was a friend of the teacher. So he wished to help them. He came and told the situation, it was safe if they gave that machine to him. They might escape from being caught. Amma trusted him and gave that machine to the police officer before the other police arrived.

7) What do you think is the writer of the incident trying to impress upon the readers?
Ans: The writer of the Narayanapura incident wants to show readers how different people fought the British in many ways. Leaders like Gandhiji fought without selfishness and inspired many Indians like the teacher, his family, and young college students like Suman. More importantly, there were people like Patil, who worked in the system but had their hearts in the freedom fight. Really, their condition was very sad. For their living, they had taken police jobs. But secretly they supported the fighters and did their part by risking their own safety.

8) How did the policeman help the teacher’s family? Why?
Ans: The police sub-inspector Patil goes to the house of the school teacher who was arrested for joining the Quit India movement. Though the teacher’s wife and children were scared at first, the sub-inspector made them calm by saying he was a classmate of the teacher in school and reminding them how the teacher had saved him from beating many times. He also showed his love for his country. He told them about the police raid planned that night since they had news about a copying machine used for making Mahatma’s speech copies. He offered to take the machine to a safe place till the search was done. He also told all others except the teacher’s family to go away as they might be blamed for hiding people too. In this way, the sub-inspector helped the teacher’s family.
