Ans: The ‘mighty movement’ refers to the
Dalit movement demanding equal rights to draw water. It happened at Mahad in
Maharashtra.
III. Answer any FOUR of the following questions in
about 60 words each. 4x3=12
18. How was
Himalayan region affected by logging, according to Vandana Shiva?
Ans: Vandana Shiva says that when forests in the Himalayan region
were cut down for commercial use, the environment was badly affected. The trees
that used to hold the soil and water together were gone. Because of this,
landslides and floods became common. Women had to walk long distances to get
firewood and water. The cutting of trees also affected farming because the soil
lost its fertility. The rivers and streams dried up, and animals lost their
shelter. People who lived in the mountains suffered the most. Vandana Shiva explains
that the destruction of forests not only damaged nature but also destroyed the
balance of life in the Himalayan region.
19. How does Don Gonzalo recall the beauty of ‘The Silver Maiden’?
Ans: Don Gonzalo remembers ‘The Silver Maiden’ as a very beautiful
young girl he once loved. He recalls her fair face, shining hair, and graceful
manners. He says that she lived in a house across the street and that he used
to watch her secretly from his balcony. Don Gonzalo also remembers how he
wanted to meet her but never got the chance. When he talks about her, he feels
both happy and sad — happy because she was lovely, and sad because he lost her
forever.
20. How does the poet portray that his love is different from that
of others in the poem 'When You Are Old'?
Ans: In the poem “When You Are Old,” the poet shows that his love
is true and pure. He says that many people loved the woman for her beauty and
youth, but his love was different. He loved her for her soul, not just for her
looks. He loved the truth and kindness in her heart. The poet tells her that
when she grows old and her beauty fades, she will realize that his love never
changed. It was not selfish or based on appearance. It was deep and honest love
that stayed forever, even when she became old and weak. This makes his love
special and unlike others.
21. How does the child’s foot get defeated as described in the poem
‘To The Foot From Its Child’?
Ans: In the poem, the poet says that a child’s foot is soft,
tender, and full of dreams. It wants to be free and play in the open. But when
the child grows up, the foot is forced to wear shoes and walk on hard roads. It
gets hurt, tired, and loses its freedom. The foot becomes rough, hard, and learns
to suffer. It forgets the joy it had in childhood. The poet says that life’s
struggles defeat the foot. It can no longer dance or move freely like before.
In this way, the child’s foot is defeated by the hardships of life and the
duties of adulthood.
22. What aspects of nature make this earth heaven according to
Kuvempu?
Ans: According to Kuvempu, nature makes the earth a kind of heaven.
He says that the green trees, the singing birds, the bright stars, the shining
sun, and the blowing wind make the world beautiful. Mountains, rivers, flowers,
and rain bring joy to all living things. The poet believes that if people live
with love, peace, and kindness, the earth becomes like heaven. He wants everyone
to enjoy nature and protect it. He also says that God lives in nature and in
every heart that is pure. When humans live in harmony with nature, the earth
itself becomes a happy and heavenly place.
23. Why bowing is difficult for a visitor to learn, according to
George Mikes?
Ans: George Mikes says that bowing is difficult for visitors to
Japan because it must be done in a perfect way. Japanese people bow to show
respect, but there are many types of bows short, long, deep, or light and each has a different meaning. A foreigner
never knows when to bow, how deep to bow, or how many times to bow. If he bows
too much, it looks funny; if he bows too little, it looks rude. Visitors often
get confused and make mistakes. Mikes humorously explains that bowing looks
simple but is actually very hard to learn because it is an important part of
Japanese manners and culture.
IV. Answer any THREE of the following questions in
about 100 words each. 3x4=12
24. What were the
arguments put forth by the prisoner for not going out of the prison in 'Too
Dear!'?
Ans: In the story “Too Dear!”, the prisoner was given freedom
because keeping him in prison was costly. But he refused to leave the prison.
He said that he had no home, no money, and no job outside. Inside the prison,
he got free food, a place to sleep, and safety. If he went out, he would have
to work hard and face many problems. He felt it was better to stay inside than
to struggle outside. The prisoner said that since he had lived in the prison
for a long time, he had become used to it. He liked the peace and comfort
there. Finally, the government allowed him to stay in the prison as a watchman,
and he was happy with that life.
25. "Laura
and Gonzalo recognize each other but conceal their identity". How does the
play 'A Sunny Morning' present this?
Ans: In the play “A Sunny Morning”, Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo meet
in a park. At first, they talk like strangers, but soon they realize they knew
each other in their youth. They were once lovers who got separated. However,
both of them are now old and do not want to reveal their real identities. So
they make up funny stories, pretending to talk about “other people” a young man and a woman who once loved each
other. They hide their names to avoid embarrassment and to keep their sweet
memories alive. The play shows how love stays in the heart even after many
years. It is both humorous and emotional, as the two old people remember their
past love but choose to keep it a beautiful secret.
26. Describe the
competition between Tammanna and Basavaiah, after Tammanna began to compose and
sing ballads.
Ans: Tammanna and Basavaiah were rich men who started competing
with each other. At first, they competed with wealth and property. But when
Basavaiah became richer, Tammanna felt jealous. Then Tammanna decided to defeat
Basavaiah through words. He began writing and singing ballads about himself,
showing his good deeds and cleverness, and making fun of Basavaiah. People
loved these songs and started praising Tammanna. This made Basavaiah very
angry. He invited singers to praise him, but nobody cared. Tammanna became
famous through his songs, while Basavaiah lost respect. Finally, Tammanna
realized that fame and rivalry were useless because both would end with death.
So he left everything and went away. The story shows how pride and competition
only bring unhappiness.
27. “The function
of books is irreplaceable”. Explain this statement with reference to 'I Believe
That Books Will Never Disappear'.
Ans: In the lesson “I Believe That Books Will Never Disappear”,
Jorge Luis Borges says that books are very important and can never be replaced
by machines or modern inventions. He believes that books are not just made of
paper and words they contain human
thoughts, dreams, and knowledge. When a person reads a book, a special
connection happens between the writer and the reader. This is something no
computer or device can give. Books can be read anytime and anywhere. They give
us imagination, peace, and wisdom. Borges says that even if technology grows,
people will always love books because they are simple, lasting, and full of life.
So, the function of books to share knowledge and ideas will always remain.
28. Why did the people of Umuofia feel that they had underrated the
power of ballot paper before in 'The Voter'?
Ans: In “The Voter” by Chinua Achebe, the people of Umuofia
understood the power of the ballot paper after the election. Earlier, they
thought voting was not very important. But during the election, Roof, a clever
man, used tricks and money to influence the voters. He took bribes from both
candidates, Marcus and Maduka, and voted for both by tearing the ballot paper
in half. This showed that one single vote could change everything. After seeing
how Roof’s one vote had so much power, the people realized that the ballot
paper was stronger than money or force. They felt they had not respected voting
enough before. The story teaches that every vote matters and that democracy
depends on honest voting.
29. Write a note on the contribution of Arivoli Iyakkam in
motivating women to learn cycling.
Ans: Arivoli Iyakkam was a literacy movement in Tamil Nadu that
helped people, especially women, to get education and confidence. It encouraged
women to learn new skills, and one of the main activities was teaching them
cycling. In Pudukkottai district, women who were part of this movement started
learning to ride bicycles to go to work, markets, and schools easily. Cycling
gave them freedom and saved time. It also made them feel strong and
independent. Many men at first laughed at them, but later they respected them.
According to P. Sainath, the biggest benefit of cycling was not just movement
but self-respect. The Arivoli Iyakkam helped rural women break social barriers
and move freely without depending on anyone.

30. A. Read the following passage and answer the
questions set on it. 9x1=9
Today's woman is
a highly self-directed person, alive to the sense of her dignity and the
importance of her functions in the private domestic domain and the public
domain of the world of work. Women are rational in approach, careful in
handling situation and want to do things as best as possible. The fourth World
Conference of
Women held in Beijing is September 1995 had emphasized that no solution to the
most threatening social, economic and political problems could be found without
the participation of the women.
The 1995 World
Summit for Social Development had also emphasized the pivotal role of women in eradicating
poverty and mending the social fabric.
The Constitution
of India has conferred on women equal rights and opportunities with men.
Because of oppressive traditions, superstitions, exploitation and corruption,
majority of women are not allowed to enjoy the rights and opportunities
bestowed to them. One of the major reasons for this state of affairs is the lack
of literacy and awareness among women. Education is the main instrument through
which we can narrow down the inequality and accelerate the process of economic
and political change in the status of women.
The role of women
in a society is very important. Women's education is the key to a better life
in the future. A recent World Bank study says that educating girls is not a
charity. If the developing nations are to eradicate poverty, they must educate
the girls. Various committees and commissions have been constituted before and
after independence to evaluate the progress in women's education and to suggest
ways and means to enhance the status of women. The female literacy rate has
gone up in the 20th century from 0.6 percent in 1901 to 39.29 percent in 1991,
but India still possesses the largest number of illiterate women in the world.
The female
literacy index for the year 1991 shows that there are eight states which fall
below the national average. The most populous states of the country, UP, MP,
Bihar and Rajasthan fall in the category of most backward states as far as
female literacy is concerned.
Women's political
empowerment got a big boost with the Panchayat Raj Act of 1993 which gave them 30%
reservation of village panchayats, Block Samitis and Zilla Parishads throughout
the country. The National Commission for women was also setup in 1992 to act as
a lobby for women's issues.
a. What was the female literacy rate in India in 1991?
Ans: 39.29 percent
b. Which is the main instrument that can be used to narrow down the
inequality of women?
Ans: Education
c. When was the National Commission for Women set up?
Ans: 1992
d. What did the 1995 World Summit for Social Development emphasise?
Ans: It emphasized the important role of
women in ending poverty and improving society.
e. Mention any one of the States that falls below the national
average in female literacy rate.
Ans: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar,
Rajasthan
f. The antonym for the word 'rational' is _________.
Ans: Irrational
g. Where was the Fourth World Conference of women held?
Ans: In Beijing
h. What should the developing nations do if they want to eradicate
poverty?
Ans: They must educate the girls.
i. Add a suffix to the word 'empower' to make its noun form.
Ans: Empowerment
