www.educsector.com

20. How does the poet explain that one man’s love is different from that of others in the poem ‘When You Are Old’?

Ans: In When You Are Old’, the poet W. B. Yeats explains that most men loved the woman only for her beauty and charm. But one man, the poet himself, loved her for her inner soul her gentle heart and true self. His love was deep, honest, and spiritual, not based on outward looks. When she becomes old and lonely, he wants her to remember this difference. The poem shows that true love never fades with time or beauty; it lives on even when youth is gone.

23. Describe the playful yet risky interaction between drivers and pedestrians in Brazil, according to George Mikes.

Ans: According to George Mikes in Japan and Brazil Through a Traveler’s Eye’, the interaction between drivers and pedestrians in Brazil is both funny and dangerous. Drivers, in turn, drive fast but stop at the very last moment, laughing or shouting in good spirit. Though it looks friendly and cheerful, it is very risky because accidents can happen anytime. Mikes humorously shows the Brazilian attitude of joy, courage, and carelessness in everyday life.

IV. Answer ANY THREE of the following questions in about 100 words each.

3×4=12

24. Why did the king of Monaco keep changing his mind in dealing with the criminal in ‘Too Dear!’?

Ans: In Leo Tolstoy’s story Too Dear!’, the King of Monaco keeps changing his mind because he realizes that punishing the criminal is very costly for his small kingdom. At first, the king decides to execute the criminal, but the kingdom has no guillotine, no executioner, and no place to do it. Hiring all these would cost too much money. Then he changes the punishment to life imprisonment, but even that becomes expensive, as the government has to feed and guard the prisoner every day. Finally, the king decides to set the criminal free because he cannot afford the cost of keeping or killing him. The story humorously shows how foolish and helpless the king is and how small kingdoms suffer from unnecessary luxury and waste. It teaches a lesson about practicality, justice, and the misuse of power.

25. ‘A Sunny Morning’ revolves around concealing one’s own identity. Discuss.

Ans: In A Sunny Morning by Serafín and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero, two elderly people, Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo, meet in a park one morning. During their conversation, they slowly realize that they were lovers in their youth. However, both have grown old and changed a lot. Instead of revealing the truth, they pretend to be friends of their younger selves. They make up stories about how “Laura” and “Gonzalo” died long ago, keeping their past love secret. This gentle deception helps them avoid embarrassment and pain. Concealing their identities allows them to relive their romantic memories without facing the sad reality of old age. The play uses humor and tenderness to show how people protect their emotions and how love remains beautiful even when hidden behind polite lies.

26. "Man lives for some kind of vengefulness. Without it, there would be no reason for his existence.” Evaluate this statement in the light of the story ‘The Gardener'.

Ans: In The Gardener by R.K. Narayan, this statement fits the story’s theme. The story is about Tammanna and Basavaiah, two rival landowners. Tammanna writes songs and stories to show his superiority, while Basavaiah builds a grand mansion and invites scholars to compete with him. Both men live not out of peace or happiness, but out of revenge and competition. Their lives are filled with jealousy and a desire to outdo each other. When Basavaiah dies, Tammanna loses his reason to live because his rival is gone—his vengeful purpose ends. This shows that many people find meaning in defeating others rather than improving themselves. The story teaches that such vengefulness leads to emptiness, and true happiness comes only when one lives without hatred or rivalry.

27. What are the views of Borges toward his mother?

Ans: In I Believe That Books Will Never Disappear’, Jorge Luis Borges speaks with great love and respect for his mother. He says that she was his best companion and helped him in his literary life, especially after he became blind. She read books to him, took down his dictations, and helped him continue his work as a writer. Borges admires her intelligence, kindness, and strength. He also says that she lived a long, meaningful life filled with energy and positivity. Even after losing her husband and son, she never lost faith in life. Borges feels grateful and lucky to have such a mother who inspired and supported him till the end. His words reflect deep affection, gratitude, and admiration for her.

Ans: In Chinua Achebe’s The Voter’, Rufus Okeke, known as Roof, is a clever and energetic election campaigner for the Progressive Alliance Party (PAP) in Umuofia. He uses his popularity and influence in the village to convince people to vote for his candidate, Marcus Ibe. Roof goes door to door, praising Marcus and offering small gifts to attract voters. However, when the rival party bribes Roof with five pounds, he faces a moral problem. On the day of the election, he cleverly tears the ballot paper into two halves, putting one part in each box, to please both sides. Roof’s actions show his selfishness and cunning nature, but also the humor and corruption in politics. The story portrays him as both smart and dishonest—a man caught between loyalty and greed.

29. Explain the economic implications of cycling among women in Pudukkottai.

Ans: In Where There Is a Wheel’ by P. Sainath, cycling among women in Pudukkottai brought a social and economic revolution. Earlier, rural women were dependent on men for travel and work. When they learned to ride bicycles, they gained freedom to move independently. They could go to markets, farms, and banks without waiting for help. This saved time and money and gave them new job opportunities. It improved their self-confidence and productivity. The ability to cycle also helped them access education, health centers, and self-help groups. Economically, women started earning and contributing to their families, breaking traditional gender roles. Cycling thus became a symbol of empowerment, equality, and rural progress, changing the lives of thousands of poor women in Pudukkottai.

B. Imagine that you are the Secretary of your students' Union and prepare a speech of about 120 words on "World No Tobacco Day". 5

Use the following information. Consuming tobacco is injurious to health - Smoking and chewing tobacco - ill effects on health - a silent killer - may lead to cancer - fatal.

Ans: Good morning respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,

Today, I am here to speak on the topic “World No Tobacco Day.” This day is observed every year to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and to encourage people to give up this deadly habit.

Consuming tobacco, whether by smoking or chewing, is extremely injurious to health. It slowly damages our lungs, heart, and mouth. It is called a silent killer because it destroys the body from within without showing early symptoms. Smoking pollutes the air and harms not only the smoker but also those nearby. Chewing tobacco affects the gums and may lead to oral cancer.

Tobacco kills millions of people every year and ruins many families. We must take a pledge to say “No to Tobacco” and spread this message to everyone. A healthy life is far more precious than any short-lived pleasure.

Let us make every day a No Tobacco Day!

Thank you.
