He says that humans think they are separate and superior to the natural world, which leads to the destruction of the environment. This feeling of separateness makes people exploit the Earth instead of living in harmony with it. Vandana Shiva agrees with Cullinan and says that we must realize that the Earth is our mother and we are her children. Only when we understand this connection can we protect and care for nature.
19. How does
Dona Laura describe her own death in ‘A Sunny Morning’?
Ans:
In the play A Sunny Morning, Dona Laura describes
her death in a poetic and imaginative way. She says that after her lover went
away, she waited for him for many years. When she did not hear from him, she
felt that life had no meaning. She tells Don Gonzalo that she walked by the
seashore one evening, and a wave came and carried her away forever. In truth,
she did not die like that, but she uses this story to hide her real identity
and to express her deep sadness and lost love.
20. Describe the
uniqueness of the poet’s love as expressed in ‘When You Are Old’.
Ans: In the poem When You Are Old by W.B. Yeats, the poet talks about a deep and spiritual kind of love. He tells the woman he loved that many men loved her for her beauty, but he loved her for her soul for the way she was inside. His love was not based on looks or youth but on her true nature. Even when she grows old and loses her beauty, his love remains pure and constant. This makes his love unique, eternal, and sincere compared to the temporary love of others.
21. Write a note
on the life of the foot in the shoe as described in the poem ‘To The Foot From
Its Child’.
Ans:
In the poem To the Foot from Its Child by Pablo Neruda, the poet imagines how
the foot’s life changes over time. When the foot is young, it is free and
happy, playing with the earth, water, and grass. But when it grows older, it is
forced into shoes and made to walk on hard roads. The foot becomes tired,
rough, and sometimes injured. Still, it continues to move forward, carrying the
person through life. The poem shows how the foot, though hidden and humble,
plays an important role in human life and struggle.
22. ‘The poet
creates heaven on earth’. Discuss this with reference to ‘Heaven, If You Are
Not Here On Earth’.
Ans:
In the poem Heaven, If You Are Not Here On Earth by
Kuvempu, the poet says that heaven is not a faraway place after death, but
something we can create here on Earth. When people live with love, peace,
truth, and harmony, the Earth becomes heaven. The poet believes that goodness,
beauty, and joy are signs of heaven. Nature, art, music, and human kindness
make life divine. He tells us to live righteously and happily so that our world
itself becomes a paradise. Thus, the poet’s message is that heaven exists
wherever goodness and happiness exist.
23. Why eating
soup is dangerous in Japan, as narrated by George Mikes?
Ans:
In Japan and Brazil Through a Traveler’s Eye, George Mikes humorously explains that
eating soup in Japan can be “dangerous” because of the strict table manners. In
Japan, people make a loud noise while drinking soup to show that they are
enjoying it. A foreigner who doesn’t know this might feel confused or
embarrassed. Mikes says that if you drink the soup quietly, it means you
dislike it. But if you try to make the proper sound, you might choke or spill
the soup! He calls it dangerous as a joke to describe the cultural difference
in eating habits.

'Too Dear!'?

Earlier, the King had decided to execute him and later decided to keep him in prison for life. When the government finally released him, the prisoner said that he was better off inside the prison where he was given food and shelter. Outside, he would have to beg and suffer. Finally, the King agreed to give him a small pension, and he continued to live near the kingdom, spending the rest of his life peacefully.
25. ‘Do you
agree that the play ' A Sunny Morning' deals with the human weakness for lying?
Elucidate with suitable examples.
Ans: Yes, the play A Sunny Morning by Serafin and Joaquin Quintero clearly shows the human weakness for lying. The two old characters, Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura, meet by chance in a park. When they recognize each other as former lovers, they both pretend not to know the truth. Dona Laura says that her lover died fighting a duel and that she later died at the seashore, while Don Gonzalo says his lover went to a convent and died soon after. Both of them tell lies to protect their pride and to hide their emotions. These lies are harmless but show how people often avoid the truth to save their dignity. The play presents lying as a gentle and human way of keeping memories beautiful and avoiding pain in old age.
26. How did the
plantation owner's lifestyle change after the arrival of the old man in ‘The
Gardener?
Ans: The owner was trying hard to improve his plantation, but he could not solve many problems. One day, he met an old man who knew a lot about farming and had good local knowledge. So, the owner immediately appointed him as a gardener. His decision turned out to be right. The old man worked wisely and solved all the problems in the plantation. As a result, the income from the garden increased greatly. The owner’s lifestyle also changed. He expanded his plantation and became rich and respected. However, he became lazy and stopped doing hard work. He made many new friends in his village and nearby places. Though he had very little real work to do, he filled his days with parties and fun. Gradually, he developed many bad habits, including being unfaithful.
27. Discuss
Borge's views on poetry.
Ans: In his essay,
Borges says that poetry is a wonderful and mysterious creation. He believes
that poetry is not made of words or rhymes alone, but of emotions, imagination,
and feelings. According to Borges, poetry helps people express their inner
thoughts and connect with others. He feels that reading or writing poetry is
one of the most human and noble acts, as it brings comfort, beauty, and
understanding into life. Borges calls books and poetry the greatest inventions
of man because they preserve wisdom and imagination for future generations. He
also says that every poem we read becomes a part of our own experience and
helps us see the world differently. Thus, Borges considers poetry as a bridge
between the human heart and the universe.
28. How did the
POP campaign team trap Roof in ‘The Voter'?
Ans:
In The Voter by Chinua Achebe, Roof was a trusted campaign
worker for Marcus Ibe, the candidate of the POP party. He was clever and loyal,
but the rival party tried to tempt him. A campaign leader from the opposing
side secretly offered Roof five pounds to vote for their candidate, Maduka.
Roof was in a dilemma because he had already promised to vote for Marcus. When
he went to the polling booth, he pretended to vote for Maduka in front of the
leader, but actually voted for Marcus. Later, when the leader asked for proof,
Roof cleverly said that the vote was secret and could not be shown. In this
way, the POP team trapped him in a situation where he could not refuse money
but still had to keep his loyalty. Roof’s greed and cleverness both got tested
that day.
29. ‘A humble
vehicle like cycle can work wonders in empowering rural woman’. Explain with
reference to ‘Where There Is A Wheel.’
Ans:
In Where There Is A Wheel, P. Sainath describes how the simple
cycle became a symbol of freedom for women in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. Earlier,
women were not allowed to move freely or do things on their own. But when the
district collector, Sheela Rani Chunkath, encouraged them to learn cycling,
their lives changed completely. The cycle gave women independence, confidence,
and self-respect. They could go to work, attend meetings, and visit nearby
villages without depending on men. It became a symbol of progress and
empowerment. Even though some people criticized them, the women proudly rode
their cycles and inspired others. Thus, the cycle helped bring social change,
equality, and dignity to rural women, proving that even a simple invention can
make a big difference in society.
