Answer the
following questions in 2-3 sentences each:
1) What picture of the sea does the poet create in
the poem ‘The Ballad of the Tempest’?
Ans:
The picture of the sea is of danger. The poet shows
the sea as a monster ready to eat everything including the ship. It looks like
the sea joins with death to kill the sailors.
2) The sailors
in ‘Ballad of the Tempest’ shuddered in silence. When did they do so?
Ans:
The sailors sat close in the cabin because a storm
was blowing outside. When the captain told to cut the mast to save the ship,
the sailors shook in silence.
1) ‘We were
crowded in the cabin, Not a soul would dare to sleep’
a. Who does the word ‘we’ refer to here?
Ans:
a. Here we refer to the group of sailors in that particular ship.
b. Not a soul would dare to sleep-why
was it so?
Ans: b. In the midnight during the winter season, their ship caught by the
violent storm. So the sailors would not dare to sleep because of fear.
2) The poet says ‘This is a fearful thing in
winter….’ According to the poet, what is referred to as a fearful thing in
winter? How would be the condition in the deep sea during winter on the sea?
Ans: The
sailors must always carry life jackets. There should be small boats which can
help if the ship sinks. The sailors must know swimming well. They should also
know the wind, sea, and sea animals.
3) How does ‘it’ affect the sailors? (Read the first
two stanzas)
Ans:
In winter the sea water is very cold and turns
frozen into ice. If the ship broke, the situation would be serious. The sailors
had to face many problems. It troubled the sailors to death. The rescue was a
hard task.
4) The speaker
and his crew-mates sat in darkness and prayed. What did they hear?
Ans:
When the speaker and his crewmates were busy with their prayers, they heard the
shout of the captain that they were lost.
5) When the captain shouted “We are lost”, how did
his daughter react?
Ans:
The captain’s daughter was small and pure. In this
moment, she stayed quiet. She held the captain’s cold hand and said softly. God
is on the sea as God on the land. God is the same everywhere.
6) The
crew-mates kissed the maiden and spoke in better cheers. What made them feel
cheerful?
Ans:
By hearing the innocent words of the little maiden, the crew-mates got some
hope. The sudden changes occurred in their heart. They kissed her and cheered
up.
7) ‘A ship is always safe at the shore, But it was
not built for that’. What does this mean?
Ans: The
ship was made to move on the sea and ocean. If we keep the ship near shore, it
is safe. But what is the use? Ships move on the sea, it must face the dangers
that may come. Then only its purpose is done. So it was not made to keep at the
shore. In the same way, man was born for some purpose, if he is not ready to
face the problems or trials of life, what is the use of his life. So we must
face the problems.
8) What is a ballad? What features of a ballad do
you see in this poem?
Ans:
A ballad is a long story poem sung with music. A
story or event is told in a ballad. Ballads are known for simple words used and
mind pictures created. Common figures of speech and fixed phrases are seen. We
notice that in the poem, the poet tells the scary events of one night and makes
the telling clear with mind images. Though it is a poem around the feeling of
fear, there is a smooth rhythm which makes the poem musical.
READ AND
APPRECIATE
1) The poet uses the phrase ‘the hungry sea’. What
can the reader imagine from this?
Ans: The
hungry sea means, the sea wanted food to eat. When the strong storm was deep
and the ship was about to sink. The sailors or the seamen had to face big risk.
In that time, the crew might feel that they could be victims. They would think
so because of fear. The reader can guess that sailor’s life is not safe. The

SUMMARY
“Ballad
of the Tempest” was written by James Thomas Fields. Once a ship was caught in a
wild storm. In this poem, the poet tells the state and trouble of the sailors.
The poem is a ballad and one of the poet’s best works. Here the speaker of the
poem is the Sailor. Truly travel on the sea is a risky job. The poem begins
when the sailors had to face great danger. The ship was caught in a strong
storm at midnight. All the sailors had gathered in the cabin.
Though
it was night, no one dared to sleep. All were scared. The storm was very
strong. It was fearful because it was winter time. The ship was about to break
by the strong wind. The sailors heard the loud noise of the trumpet and someone
shouted to cut off the mast. All sailors kept silence out of fear. Even the
boldest strong man held his breath. The sea was roaring like a hungry lion. The
big rough waves spoke with death and moved towards the shore. All were sitting
in the dark.
Everyone
prayed to God for their safety. At that time the captain cried that they were
lost. When he came slowly down the stairs, his little daughter with her pure
heart whispered. She held her father’s cold hands and said that the God on the
sea was the same as on land, isn’t it? By hearing her words all felt hope and
prayed to God deeply. All kissed the little girl. Suddenly a great change came,
and the sailors anchored the ship safely in harbour. The morning sky was
shining very bright. The danger which came like a mountain vanished like sand.
Fortune helps the brave. God is everywhere but man has trust in him.
