Unexpected
Answer the following questions in a sentence or two
each.
1. What
news did Tom and Alec brings Mrs. Parker?
Ans. Tom and Alec rushed Mrs.
Parker cottage to inform her about two convicts who had escaped from the
prison.
2. What
effect did the news have on her?
Ans. Mrs. Parker had dropped a
tea-cosy which she had held and remained motionless when she heard the
news.
3. Why
did Mrs. Parker want the two boys to get home immediately?
Ans. Mrs. Parker wanted the two
boys to get home immediately because two convicts were in moors and their
mother would be worried out of her life if they were not home before
long.
4. Why
were the boys surprised at Mrs. Parker’s nervousness?
Ans. Mrs. Parker was a staying in
a cottage which lied in moors and she was alone in that place and the boys
surprised at Mrs. Parker’s nervousness because they thought they had frightened
her.
5. How
did Alec and Tom show their dislike of Joe as he entered the house?
Ans. Alec and Tom were unhappy
when they saw Joe in that house and they argued with him as he enquired them
about their appearance in that house. Tom was ready to blow his nose but Mrs.
Parker handled the situation.
6. ‘Then
why not do it first, and boast about it afterwards?’ What is the point of
Tom’s teasing Joe?
Ans. Both boys were distressed by
the entry of Joe and Tom argued with him, latter Joe challenged that he would
catch one of the culprit at that moment Tom replied and said him to do it first
then about it afterwards.
7. What
is Joe’s ambition in life? How does Alec tease him about it?
Ans. Joe’s ambition in life was
to become a great detective by hearing this Alec teased him and said, “Don’t be
a silly chump, Joe. You’re too much of a gas-bag to make a decent detective.
8. On
what grounds does Joe suspect Mrs. Parker?
Ans. Joe was detective and he was
keeping an eye on Mrs. Parker’s cottage. He suspected on her when gathered the
details about her as, Mrs. Parker was staying alone in the cottage in moors,
she was not allowing any stranger to her house except Tom and Alec. And she had
a Bentley sports car hidden away in an old shed.
9. I’ve
been doin’ a little detective works round here myself this last
half-hour.
Does Joe succeed in detecting
anything?
Ans. Yes, Joe had succeeded in
detecting and he found a Bentley sports car hidden away in an old shed.
10. Why
does Joe consider it his business to find out things?
Ans. Joe was taking
correspondence lesson from a school of detective and his uncle was constable
and he wanted to join the Force himself. So it was his business to find out
things.
11. How
do we know that the convict is not Mrs. Parker’s son?
Ans. Mrs. Parker had explained
about her son both of boys that her son was innocent and Roger was deceived by
his friend in the office and signed his employer’s name to a cheque but the
forgery was discovered suspicion fell upon him.
12. At
what stage do Mrs. Parker and her son get a chance to discuss their
escape plan? Ans. When warder (Roger) entered
room to search the clothes of prisoner at the moment Mrs. Parker and her son
got a chance to discuss their escape plan.
13. Under
what pretext was the Bentley sports-car taken out?
Ans. The Bentley sports car was
kept in an old shed to help Roger to flee away. When warder (Roger) took
convict (friend) at that moment Joe expressed about car and Roger took that
Bentley sports car as a main evidence for the case.
14. Why
does Joe want to ride up to the prison?
Ans. Joe wanted to ride up to the
prison because he could see the Governor and tell him just what happened that
evening.
15. How
and why does the ‘Warder’ take him out of that idea?
Ans. Warder praised him for his
idea, later he said that all the roads were guarded and he might have trouble
to pass and he needed password.
16. I’m
not the one to blab any secrets about. How correct is Joe’s self-
assessment? Ans. Joe was overconfident and
because of that he revealed the password ‘Regent’ to the convicts.
Write a
paragraph of about 100 words on each of the following.
1. Mrs.
Parker’s account of why her son was convicted and sent to jail.
Ans. According to Mrs. Parker her
son was convicted and sent to jail for another’s crime. Roger was working in
the office and in same office one boy who pretended to be his friend. That man
signed his employer’s name to a cheque, but he covered his tracks so cleverly
that when the forgery was discovered suspicion fell upon Roger. The chain of
circumstantial evidence was very strong indeed. Roger was known to be in money
difficulties and to have had unusual opportunities for passing a forged cheque.
And in the end Roger was convicted and sentenced to three years’ penal
servitude.
2. Where
women are concerned, the unexpected always happens. Comment on
the unexpected happenings in the
play.
Ans. As Tom had commented the
above sentence in many occasion as that sentence was addressed to him by his
father. First incident where Tom uttered that statement when a convict entered
that house Mrs. Parker was s nervous and then almost fainting at the last
minute as strain had been so terrible. And second incident where Tom uttered
that statement when he witnessed that the convict was caught by warder and the
warder took him away in the Bentley sports car, later he felt sorry Mrs. Parker
for losing her son once again at that moment Mrs. Parker said him that the
warder was only her son who had just flee away.

Contrast the characters of Tom and Alec.
Ans. Tom and Alec were teenagers
and very kind boys, they ready to help anyone those who were in need. Tom and
Alec were good pals of Mrs. Parker who had been staying in a cottage far away
from village and alone. When both boys heard about the convicts had escaped and
ran away towards the moors. Then they ran to say that news. Tom and Alec were
worried about Mrs. Parker when they came to know about her son was forged in a
case by his fellow mate. Even they expressed their sympathies to her and
promised her to help how they could. Meanwhile Joe interrupted them and both
boys were very much angry on him and Tom fought with Joe and helped the convict
to run away. Even both boys were very helpful to Mrs. Parker. They were
generous and sympathetic towards her.
4. How
does Joe Badger ‘help’ the convicts to escape?
Ans. Joe Badger a teenager who
was studying detective from a correspondence school to join Force. He always
considered himself as the cleverest fellow. When Joe heard about the convicts
then he rushed to Mrs. Parker’s cottage to investigate about them. He encountered
with Tom and Alec who were with Mrs. Parker in that cottage. Joe enquired about
convicts and asked Mrs. Parker about her stay in that cottage lonely and the
purpose of the Bentley sports car in an old shed. Joe always considered himself
as smart in all aspects, in this smartness he caught one of the convicts and
was proud for that. Even Joe fought with Tom when Tom was planning to escape
that convict but he managed that situation until a warder caught that convict.
Joe was excited by seeing the warder and he explained everything to him and
requested the warder to allow him to go with him to the prison, at that same
time he revealed the password ‘Regent’ in front of the warder showing his
smartness but the warder himself was convict and finally both convicts escaped
from that place in the Bentley sports car. Overall Joe indirectly helped both
convicts to escape.
