Sunday Costs Five Pesos 


Answer the following questions in a sentence or two each. 


1. ‘She loved him yesterday, and she will love him tomorrow’. Is Salome right in her observation? 

Ans. Yes, Salome is right in her observation because it’s a lovers’ quarrel between Berta and Fidel. 


2. ‘As for you, my fine rooster, go and play the bear to Celestina Garcia’. Explain. 

Ans. Berta was unhappy and angry on Fidel. Fidel had spent his time with Celestina in a plaza and Berta saw both of them in that plaza. Meanwhile Fidel tired to convince her but Berta didn’t convince by his words and said him to go and spend his time with Celestina Garcia. 


3. Why is Berta in such a fury? 

Ans. Berta was in such a fury because Fidel had gone to plaza twice with Celestina. 


4. How did Don Nimfo Happen to finance the building of the new church at Topo Grande? 

Ans. Don Nimfo had blessed Virgin of Topo Grande if his rooster won the cock-fight then he offer money and he won that fight and he financed the building of the new church at Topo Grande secretly. 


5. In what way does Don NImfo’s offer sound attractive to Fidel? 

Ans. It would take three years to carve the doors of church, and Don Nimfo would pay Fidel every week and that would be enough for him to buy a trousseau and enough left over for a house. So, offer sound attractive to Fidel. 


6. Why does Tonia ask Salome to be careful? 

Ans. Salome was sitting on the edge of the well and caught her knee and began to rock back and forth by seeing that Tonia asked Salome to be careful before she would fall down the well. 


7. Where does Salome expect Fidel to have gone to? Why is she so sure about this? 

Ans. Salome expected Fidel had gone to Saloon because all men with a broken heart definitely rush to saloon. 


8. Why is Celestina so angry with Berta? 

Ans. Celestina was angry with Berta because Berta had insulted Celestina by calling her four nosed shrew. 


9. What does Fidel threaten to do with himself? 

Ans. If Berta was not ready to marry Fidel then he would enter a monastery. 


10. On what condition does Berta give her consent for the marriage? 

Ans. Fidel said clearly that he didn’t concern about Celestina and promised her to marry on Monday. So, Berta gave her consent for the marriage. 


Write a paragraph of about 100 words on each of the following. 


1. Write a note on Berta’s character. 

Ans. Berta a beautiful young girl, living in a housed- in square in the town of the Four Cornstalks in Northern Mexico. Berta had two friends and neighbours, Tonia and Salome. Berta had a misunderstanding with her fiancé Fidel, a door-carver, who accused him of flirting with another girl named Celestina. Berta had a ‘lover’s quarrel’ with Fidel. Fidel couldn’t stand her hot temper. Berta through jealousy breaks off with her fiancé then, repentant, tired to win him back with the aid of well meaning friends who only managed to involve her in further difficulties. Berta had insulted Celestina by calling her four nosed shrew, later Celestina argued on this matter. 


2. Consider Fidel Duran as a lover. 

Ans. Fidel Duran was a young lover and professionally a carver. Fidel had chastised unfortunately by his fiancée Berta that he was flirting with Celestina. Fidel being an honest lover always tried to convince her in all aspects but Berta was jealous and high temper lady and didn’t understand his words. Even Berta had insulted Fidel by mocking on his work but Fidel didn’t concern more on those words and as a true lover he requested her to understand his words. Fidel clarified Berta about the meeting with Celestina for a cause. Fidel couldn’t stand her hot temper and went away. Later when Fidel heard about mishap with Berta, he rushed to her and was pleading to get her back. Overall Fidel was a true lover who always concerned Berta even after when had insulted him and doubted him. 


3. The role of Salome and Tonia in bringing Fidel back to Berta. 

Ans. Salome and Tonia were true friends of Berta. Knowing the reality of Berta and fiancée both of them always stood with them and helped them in all aspects of life. Salome was a clever lady as Tonia was younger than both of them and had distressing habit of whining. There was a misunderstanding between Berta and Fidel and both of them were separated and not at all ready to talk with each other. Salome used her smartness and planned to save their relationship. Salome suggested Berta to pretend to be too sick so that Fidel should come back to her. Meanwhile Celestina came to fight with Berta but Salome and Tonia helped her in this matter, latter Salome fought with Celestina. Fidel was nervous when he came to know about Berta that news was given to him by Tonia. Tonia and Salome both were really true friends of Berta. At the end of play Fidel and Berta planned to marry and live happily.
