3. Make up sentences of your own using the following:

Comprehension 

Answer the following questions in a sentence or two each: 

1. ‘He’s past my aid, but a surgeon might save him’. What makes Bridget say this? 

Ans. Bridget had tried her best to look after that stranger who was severely wounded and tied bandages to his wounds but injury was so severe, even that stranger lost his too much blood. So Bridget was worried of that stranger and said that she pasted her aid but a surgeon might save him. 


2. Who was the stranger? How was he wounded? 

Ans. The stranger was Lord Selsley. He was wounded by Captain Stark when he challenged him to fight with him. 


3. Why couldn’t Reuben have sent for a surgeon? 

Ans. Reuben couldn’t send for a surgeon because his son Samuel was away at Windsor and he didn’t have any horse left behind to go and Reuben was shivering to go out as he was 65 years old. 


4. ‘Twould pay ye better to fetch some good spirits from the cellar, master’. When did Bridget say this? What was her reason for asking for good spirits?

Ans. Bridget said these words when Reuben said that it was a wild sky and even evil spirits were aboard that night. These words she said in the sense to help Dan to fetch a surgeon and come back safely to Blue Boar. 


5. How was Daredevil Dan hurt? 

Ans. As Daredevil Dan was in search of a surgeon mean while he dashed with the two Runners who were in search of him, when tried to flee away from them, that moment one of them shot in his arm by a way of a parting gift. 


6. ‘Inquisitiveness is a woman’s privilege. Silence is golden. Say no more’. Explain. 

Ans. Surgeon was suspicious by seeing the wounds of stranger and Dan and he was arguing with Reuben by saying that stranger and Dan had fought and injured them. Reuben said that the stranger was innocent fellow but surgeon was not ready to accept this reality that moment he said that he would be quite on this matter than arguing with him. 


7. ‘I respect a good deed in a naughty world, as Shakespeare has it’. What did the surgeon mean by these words?

Ans. According to surgeon, as we strive to awaken in our young people desire to do good deeds in our surely very naughty world. It is intention to try to show that we have good ammunition for such a campaign in the teaching of Shakespeare’s tale. 


8. ‘Proceed with your discourse; I am in a mood for argument’. What was the discourse about? How did the surgeon get into his mood?

Ans. Reuben had shown mercy on D. Dan to save his life from runners and he requested surgeon to help him to save but at that moment surgeon avoided to help him as he didn’t want to take law in his hands and didn’t want to get in any trouble. Surgeon expressed that he was not interested in any sort of business to help him but ready to listen his conversation with Reuben. 


9. ‘You can twist words to your own purpose like the sharpest of the fraternity’. Explain. 

Ans. Reuben was worried about Dan, who had saved the life of the stranger and even was severely injured, at that moment he argued with surgeon to help him to save the life of Dan but surgeon in anger said that he would have been a lawyer to change words according to purpose as lawyers did in the court to save the criminals. 


10. Why does Reuben say to the surgeon, ‘Tis too late now, your honour. The cat’s out o’ the bag’?

Ans. Reuben said these words to the surgeon because the runners were waiting for Dan to get treatment and later they would take him away with them. 


11. ‘You touch me there, good Reuben. ‘How does Reuben appeal to the surgeon on behalf of Dan?

Ans. Reuben was a kind person and he didn’t want Dan should be punished because he had saved the life of stranger. Meanwhile surgeon was not ready to help Reuben to flee Dan from there but Reuben put words of humanity and said to help Dan for that purpose, at that moment surgeon become emotional and said that your words touch me there.


12. ‘No, your eyes do not deceive you. I am real flesh and blood.’ Explain.

Ans. D. Dan had been freeing himself and rising quietly from his chair and later he went to pantry and locked the door of it, the surgeon stared him with dropped jaw, as if he saw a ghost. At that moment Dan said to him that he was real flesh and blood , not a ghost. 


13. ‘The stranger paid his debt with that knife.’ How did he do it? 

Ans. The stranger was injured and Dan had fetched a surgeon for his treatment and helped him. When the runners had tied Dan with a rope and left him beside the bed of stranger. When the runners were outside, the stranger took a knife which was lying on dresser, then he cut the rope and freed Dan from that chair and fell down and exhausted. That’s why Dan exclaimed that the stranger had paid his debt with that knife. 


Composition 

Write a paragraph of about 100 words on each of the following: 

1. The role of Bridget in saving young Lord Selsley’s life. 

Ans. Bridget was an elderly woman with generous and kind nature towards everyone. On a particular day Lord Selsley had come to Blue Boar, but Captain Stark had wounded him and ran away. Bridget saw that young lad, who was falling down on floor. She had taken care of Lord Selsley, as if he was her son. She had a bowl of water and a linen cloth which she constantly damped and laid on her patient’s forehead. She was so much worried about him. Even she requested the owner to fetch a surgeon for her patient as the wound so severe. Bridget had dressed the wounds of patient and tried her best to save the life of young Lord Selsley until the surgeon visited that inn. 


Attempt a character sketch of the surgeon. 

Ans. Surgeon was jolly and ebullient person, who was found of brandy and edible things. As he heard about brandy when reached that inn, surgeon was excited and demanded to serve him as soon as possible. Surgeon was very curious to know about that stranger and Dan’s wounds. He had doubt on both wounded persons, and he thought that Dan had injured the stranger. Surgeon views were completed different as he was suspicious on everyone in that inn and argued with Reuben regarding the patients. Surgeon had shown his rejection to save the life of Dan. Even he warned Reuben daren’t to help Dan otherwise he would be in risk and it was equal to go against the law. Surgeon always showed his smartness. At last when Reuben convinced him by sense of humanity then the surgeon was ready to help him.

 

3. How did the wounded Lord Selsley help Daredevil Dan to escape? 

Ans. Lord Selsley and Daredevil Dan were kept in same chamber as they were injured and fainted. When the wounded Lord Selsley woke up then looked round to his left and catching sight of carving knife on dresser, with a great effort he reached out for it with his left hand. Grasping it carefully, he transferred it to his right and began to saw at the rope that binds Dan to his chair. His actions were not observed by anyone else, not even Dan. At intervals, the stranger had to pause to rest, as he found the work exhausting. Meanwhile Dan got aware of the stranger’s efforts to release him. The stranger had at last cut the cords, with a last effort; he put back the knife on the dresser and collapsed. In such a way the wounded Lord Selsley helped Dan to escape.


Essay Type. 


1. Tell, in your own words, the story of how Reuben saved the lives of the two wounded men- young Lord Selsley and Daredevil Dan.

Ans. Reuben Strongitharm was a bald old man of sixty five, the landlord of the Blue Boar. He was kind, generous and helpful to everyone. Once Lord Selsley and Captain Stark came to his inn and later they fought and Captain Stark injured Selsley and ran away. Reuben by the help of Bridget took him on couch and started aiding his wounds. Reuben thought to fetch a surgeon to save the life of Selsley but he hobbled painfully being an old fellow. Even there was no horse in stable. When Dan visited that inn he convinced him indirectly to fetch a surgeon for the patient and Dan fetched a surgeon and he returned with injury on his arm. Reuben noticed Dan injury and the surgeon dressed first Lord Selsley wound later Dan’s wound. Meanwhile runners came to that inn in search of Dan and they were ready to take him with them. But surgeon requested them to leave him to dress his wounds and they agreed. Later Reuben was requesting surgeon to help him to save the life of Dan from the runners because Dan had saved the life of stranger, but surgeon was not ready at beginning later he agreed to help him . At that moment Lord Selsley had cut rope chords and freed Dan and Reuben was glad and helped him to flee away from that place. 


2. Attempt a character sketch of the Daredevil Dan. 

Ans. Daredevil Dan was a highwayman, he was a gallant fellow, who was not afraid anyone even he was ready to face anyone. He was disheveled but was dashing figure; he wore a mask which helped him to keep his reality away from others. He visited to Blue Boar after fleeing away from the hounds which were close on his track but he was capable to escape from them. Dan saw an injured stranger in that inn, he felt uneasy and thought to help and save the life of that stranger, so he went to fetch a surgeon. Daredevil was in search of a surgeon at that moment he encountered the runners who were after him. He would have argued with them but he was worried about strangers and he galloped off, but did not get away without a short in his arm by way of a parting gift. Being injured, he fetched a surgeon and saved the life of stranger.
