I. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION BRIEFLY:

1) The writer speaks of the ‘smile’ that welcomes anyone who enters Hanif’s house. What more do we know about his ‘smile’?
Ans: Those who came into Hanif’s house were greeted with his smile. But this smile stayed only within the photo frame. Lieutenant Hanifuddin was a young hero. He gave up his life in the Kargil war at the age of 25 years. He loved his duty and stayed cheerful all the time.

2) What did Hanif choose as his mission? Why did he do so?
Ans: During his training at the IMA, he slowly turned into a devoted soldier. Maybe Hanifuddin felt that his life was short and he had to keep reminding himself of his duty. Even though he belonged to a family of musicians, he wished to change lives, so he entered the army and chose this mission to serve the nation.

3) Life for Hanif, in the beginning, was never a smooth sail. Why was it so?
Ans: When Hanif was just eight years old, he lost his father. He had to take care of his three younger brothers. His mother Hema Aziz had a travelling job and was away most of the time. They had to manage their work on their own. So life was not very easy.

4) The absence of a mother from home taught the children something. What was that?

Ans: Hanif’s mother, a singer, often had to leave Hanif and his brothers alone, as she travelled with the performance group of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The mother’s absence taught the children the value of self-reliance. Their mother going to work without fail gave them the lesson that one’s duty is the most important thing in life.

5) How does the writer describe the ‘introvert’ Hanif?
Ans: The writer says that Hanif, who was shy, began making friends only when he was 14 years old. But this never stopped him from helping others. Many people recalled his kind help even after his death.

6) Hanif was a young man with varied talents and interest. Illustrate this statement by drawing support from the text.
Ans: The life of Hanif was always carefree and joyful. He drew very well, made lovely cards from waste things, read many books and enjoyed playing the drums. As a young man, he was very gifted and showed a great love for life.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

2) What were the dreams of Hanif? Do you think they were fulfilled?
Ans: Hanif had dreamed that he would rise higher in the army ranks. This dream was not fulfilled because he lost his life in the Kargil war. Another dream of his was that a post should be named after him. That dream became true when a sub-sector was given his name.

3) Hanifuddin ‘A Great Martyr’ was a talented young man. Describe.
Ans: Hanif, even as a boy of fourteen, cared for everyone around him. It is sad that he passed away before his life could fully bloom. But what stands out is that, along with his care for others and love for the nation, he was also known for his skill. At the Indian Military Academy, he practiced art and drew very well. He found joy in making cards from waste, reading many books, and playing drums. The officers at the Raj Rifs asked him to bring all his instruments from Delhi to form the music group later named ‘Hanif 7’.

4) How did Hema Aziz teach her children the message that “one’s duty is the most important thing in life”?

Ans: Hanif’s mother, being a widow with three children to raise, had to work. As a singer, she often travelled with the performance group of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. When she went out for work, she gave no explanations to her children. Yet, the children understood and learned that doing one’s duty is the most important thing in life.
