18.How
does Tagore’s ‘Tapovan’ prove that the forests have been source of rejuvenation
for Indian civilization?
Ans: In
'Tapovan,' Tagore explains that Indian civilization has been closely
connected with nature, particularly forests, which have served as
places of learning, spiritual growth, and transformation. The great sages and
scholars of India lived in the forests, drawing inspiration from the serenity
and purity of nature. These forests nurtured Indian philosophy,
culture, and wisdom, making them a vital part of the country’s
intellectual and spiritual heritage.
19. How
does Laura kill herself in the story narrated by her in ‘A Sunny Morning’?
Ans: In 'A Sunny
Morning,' Dona Laura narrates a story about her youthful love. After her lover
is injured in a duel and forced to flee, she waits for his return. But, unable
to bear the heartbreak, she throws herself into the sea. This
dramatic version of the story is an inflated account of her emotions, and
although it's fictional, it highlights her deep feelings for her lover.
20. Describe
the uniqueness of the poet’s love as expressed in the poem ‘When You Are Old’.
Ans: In the poem 'When
You Are Old,' the poet's love is described as unique because it goes beyond
physical beauty. While others may love the woman's youthful charm, the poet
loves her "pilgrim soul" and the "sorrows
of her changing face." His love is deep, enduring, and based
on her inner qualities, making it a pure and selfless love that remains even as
time takes its toll.
21. Trace
the path of the child’s foot after it gets defeated in the battle, in the poem
‘To the Foot from its Child’.
Ans: In the poem 'To
the Foot from its Child,' the foot’s journey is symbolic of the human
experience of growing up and facing life's struggles. Initially, the
child’s foot is free, running, playing, and unburdened. However, as it grows
and faces the world, the foot is "defeated in the battle"
by shoes, which restrict its movement and freedom. Over time, the foot becomes
accustomed to its confines, adapting to the demands of life, but loses the
innocence and joy of childhood.
22. Why
does Kuvempu feel that the heaven is on earth only in the poem ‘Heaven, if you
are not here on earth?
Ans: In Kuvempu’s poem,
the poet expresses that heaven exists on earth through love, beauty,
and nature. He believes
that earth itself embodies heavenly qualities when people live
pleasantly with nature and one another. The poet rejects the idea of an
abstract, distant heaven, asserting that paradise is found in the experiences
of life on earth, where joy and fulfillment are possible if one embraces life
fully.
23. Comment
on the difficulty of pedestrians in crossing the road in Brazil as explained in
‘Japan and Brazil Through A Traveler’s Eye’.
Ans: In 'Japan and
Brazil Through A Traveler’s Eye,' the narrator observes that crossing
roads in Brazil is a difficult and risky task for pedestrians. Unlike
in Japan, where pedestrian rights are strictly respected, Brazilian drivers
tend to be less considerate. Pedestrians must wait long periods for an
opportunity to cross the road, and even then, they may not feel safe, as cars
rarely slow down for them. This creates a scary and challenging environment for
those trying to navigate the streets on foot.
IV. Answer
any three of the following questions in about 100 words each
3x4=12
24. Write
a note on the gaming house in Monaco as described in ‘Too Dear’.
Ans: In Leo Tolstoy's
story "Too Dear," the gaming house in Monaco is a significant source
of revenue for the tiny principality. Monaco is too small and poor to sustain
itself through unadventurous means like taxes, so the rulers allow the
operation of a gaming house, or casino, which attracts gamblers from
neighboring countries. The income generated from gambling helps the state
finance its expenditures, including governance and public services. Despite the
moral questions surrounding the establishment, the people of Monaco are
dependent on it for financial stability. The gaming house serves as an ironic
backdrop to the story's exploration of justice and punishment, as the state is
willing to use an unethical means, like gambling, to support its economy while
grappling with the cost of dealing with a criminal in an equally unethical
manner.
25. Describe
the ill-natured prelude to the meeting between Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo in
the play ‘A Sunny Morning’.
Ans: In "A Sunny
Morning," Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo have a comically aggressive encounter
before they recognize each other as former lovers. Both elderly and set in
their ways, they bicker when Don Gonzalo attempts to sit on a park bench
already occupied by Dona Laura. Gonzalo rudely scares away the pigeons Dona
Laura is feeding, and the two engage in mocking remarks and petty insults.
Gonzalo complains about the lack of peace in public spaces, while Laura
counters with sharp wit. Their initial exchange reveals their pride and
stubbornness, adding humor to the scene and creating dramatic tension. This
ill-natured preface contrasts with the softness that follows once they realize
they share a romantic past, making their eventual settlement more emotional.
26. Evaluate
the methods adopted by Tammanna and Basavaiah to defeat each other.
Ans: In the story
"The Gardener," Tammanna and Basavaiah are locked in a bitter
rivalry, each attempting to outdo the other in different ways. Basavaiah
initially resorts to material means by seizing Tammanna’s land, trying to
assert dominance through wealth and property. In response, Tammanna chooses an
intellectual path by creating poetry and songs that mock Basavaiah, gaining the
admiration and respect of others for his creativity and wit. When Basavaiah
fails to compete with Tammanna’s artistic success, Tammanna escalates the
conflict by rejecting all material possessions, including his remaining land
and wealth. This final act of renunciation leaves Basavaiah defeated, as he can
no longer compete with someone who has nothing left to lose. The methods
employed by both characters reflect a contrast between materialism and
intellectual or spiritual superiority, ultimately showing that victory through the mind is more
enduring than through material possessions.
27. Why
the people of Umuofia did not want to vote Marcus Ibe for free, for the second
time, in the story ‘The Voter’?
Ans: In Chinua Achebe's
"The Voter," the people of Umuofia are reluctant to vote for Marcus
Ibe for free during his re-election campaign because they have become
accustomed to receiving bribes in exchange for their votes. During his first
campaign, Marcus, a member of the People's Alliance Party (PAP), had used money
and gifts to secure votes. Over time, the villagers began to view elections as
an opportunity to receive personal benefits. This created a culture of vote-buying, where political support was treated
as a commodity. The villagers no longer saw Marcus as a leader deserving of
their votes out of loyalty or good governance; instead, they believed he owed
them for their support. This transactional relationship between voters and
politicians reflects the corruption and decline of democratic
principles in Umuofia, where elections have become about personal gain rather
than civic duty.
28. What
are the advantages of riding bicycle for the women of Pudukkottai as mentioned
in the article ‘Where There is A Wheel’?
Ans: In the article
"Where There is a Wheel," the introduction of bicycles brings
significant advantages to the women of Pudukkottai, empowering them in various
ways. Firstly, bicycles offer mobility and independence, allowing women to travel long
distances without relying on men or public transportation. This newfound
mobility helps them participate in work, education, and community activities,
which were previously inaccessible due to lack of transportation. Secondly,
cycling boosts their self-confidence and helps break
traditional gender norms, as women who ride bicycles challenge societal
expectations that confine them to domestic roles. The act of cycling also
fosters a sense of companionship and unity among the women, encouraging
collective empowerment. Additionally, bicycles provide economic benefits by
making it easier for women to engage in productive activities such as selling
goods in distant markets. Overall, the bicycle becomes a tool of social
change and freedom, promoting gender equality and improving the
quality of life for the women of Pudukkottai.
29. Criticize
the various implied discriminations expressed in the poem ‘Water’.
Ans: In the poem
"Water," the poet uses water as a metaphor to explore the deep-seated
social and economic discriminations present in society. While water is
a basic necessity for all human beings, the poem reveals that access to it is
not equally available to everyone. The act of some people controlling
and restricting access to water
reflects larger collective structures of caste, class, and privilege. The poem criticizes
the way water, a symbol of purity and life, is used to reinforce hierarchies,
as those in power decide who is worthy of receiving it and who is not. The hoarding
of water by the privileged and the rejection of it to the marginalized
symbolizes the exclusion and inequality that pervades social
systems. The poet also suggests that water, while it can sit innocently in a
puddle or well, becomes a tool of oppression when controlled by those who use
it to maintain their dominance over others, highlighting the injustice
of this discrimination.
PART - C
V. 30.A. Read the following passage and answer the
questions set on it 9x1=9
It may
seem like nothing can live in a desert because it's so dry. But most deserts
are full of life, with plants and animals that have adapted to survive without
much water. Some plants, like cacti, store enough water in their stems to last
until the next rain. Tribes that live in deserts are often nomadic, which means
that they don't stay in one place for very long, and instead move around a lot
to find new resources. These people also often farm and herd cattle and other
animals which are well adapted to desert life. Deserts often have harsh
conditions, such as high winds, sandstorms and rugged terrain, which can make
it difficult to travel and survive. Fennec foxes are well-adapted for life in
African and Arabian deserts. Their pale fur camouflages them against the sand;
it also grows on the bottoms of their feet to give them traction while running
in the sand and protects their feet from the hot desert surface. The Arctic and
Antarctic are referred to as polar deserts. 20% of the total deserts have sand on
their surfaces. Cold deserts have a very low temperature in comparison to hot
deserts and are covered with snow or ice. The largest cold desert on Earth is
Antarctica.
The
Sahara is a desert spanning across North Africa. With an area of 9,200,000 km,

B. Assume
that you are the secretary of the college student union. You are asked to speak
on the importance World Wild Life Day at the assembly. Prepare a speech in
about 120 words using the following information: 5M
Importance
of coexisting with other species – Decreasing forests – Animals entering the
villages – The role of citizens in conserving wild life – Informing the Forest
Department about smuggling of parts of animals.
Ans:
Good morning everyone,
Today, as the Secretary of the College
Student Union, I stand before you to highlight the significance of World
Wildlife Day. This day reminds us of the urgent need to coexist with the
diverse species that share our planet. As our forests continue to dwindle,
animals are increasingly encroaching upon our villages, often leading to
conflicts between humans and wildlife.
It is crucial for each of us to recognize
our role in conserving wildlife. We must actively participate in protecting our
natural habitats and advocate for sustainable practices. Citizens play a vital
role in this mission, whether it's reporting illegal activities or informing
the Forest Department about the smuggling of animal parts.
Let us work together to create a balanced
ecosystem where humans and wildlife thrive. By raising awareness and taking
action, we can ensure a future where wildlife is preserved for generations to
come.
Thank you.
