INTERJECTIONS
Words spoken/ uttered all of a sudden such
that they express various states of our mind (happiness, sorrow, surprise,
etc.) are called interjections.

An interjection is a word that expresses a strong or sudden feeling.
§
It a short exclamation. Wow! Ouch! Boom! Hurrah! OMG! Marvelous! etc.
EXAMPLES:

Hurray! We won the cricket match. (Joy)

Ouch! It is painful so badly. (Sadness)

Alas! She lost her father. (Extreme grief)
·
Hey! Get out of my house. (Instruction
to go)
·
Wow! That’s really a great news. (Pleasure or surprise)

Hello! May I know your good name? (Salutation)
·
Bravo! An outstanding performance. (Appreciation)
·
Hurrah! Our team have defeated the opponent. (Joy)

Hush! Principal is at the door. (Instruction to be quiet)
·
Wow! What a great piece of art. (Pleasure or surprise)
·
Alas! He has lost everything in mutual fund. (Extreme grief)
·
Ah! The breeze is so lovely. (Pleasure)
·
Oh! That is right there. (Surprise)
·
Oh! I am so sorry sir. (Sadness)
·
How dirty his clothes are! (Surprise)
·
What a pretty baby she is! (Appreciation)

Congratulations! You have a baby boy. (Joy)

Yeah! I got his number. (Pleasure or surprise)

Good! Now you can start a business. (Appreciation)

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Interjections are followed by an exclamation mark (!)
•
Some sentences, wherein interjections are used, take an exclamation mark
at the end of the sentence.
•
Besides the normally used interjections, some other words can also be
converted into interjections with the aid of an exclamation mark.
SOME UNCONVENTIONAL INTERJECTIONS
shh, ho-ho, oho, boo, lo, ugh, hump, ahem, ow, whoops,
hi, ho, yuk, help, tut-tut, pooh, etc.
However, these interjections are not commonly used.
