Comprehension:

I. Answer the following in two or three sentences each:

1) What was Arun doing all alone on the platform? Why?

Ans: Arun was perched on stage no. 8 at Ambala station hanging tight for the north-bound train. His train was at midnight and he had shown up at the station at night itself.

 

2) What normally happens when a train arrives at the platform?
Ans: At the point when a train arrives, the stage will be a hellfire of hurling, yelling, and fomented individuals. As the carriage entryways open, individuals will surge towards the leave door.

 

3) “Are you alone, my son?” How did Arun react when he heard the voice of a stranger? Why?

Ans: Satish's mom prompted Arun to be cautious when his mom was not with him. She harshly advised him not to converse with outsiders. Arun needed to stand up for himself, so he said that he preferred outsiders.

Ans: Arun frowned angrily at her, and drew nearer to the lady who had become a close acquaintance with him. Satish stood griming behind his mom. He was making the most of Arun's conflict with his mom.

 

8) What did Satish’s mother give and say to Satish as a parting advice?
Ans: She gave him a sack of fruits, a cricket bat and a major' box of chocolates. She advised Satish to impart the food to Arun.

 

9) Why didn’t Satish’s mother think Arun’s ‘mother’ a very capable person?
Ans: The outsider didn't appear to show such an extensive amount worry as Satish's mom. Satish's mom overwhelmed the discussion. She continued exhorting the two young men. She thought Arun's 'mom' was unequipped for dealing with her child.

 

10) How did Arun repay the strange woman for her goodness?
Ans: At the point when the train was going to move, Arun kissed the lady on her cheek. He tended to her as 'mother' and bade her farewell.

Ans: The reason behind the speaker saying so that she did not want Satish’s mother to think that Arun’s mother had not come to see him off.

 

3. “These days one has to be very careful of strangers”.

i) Who said these words?
Ans: Satish’s mother said these words.

 

ii) Why did the speaker say so?
Ans: The speaker said so because those days outsiders and dubious characters were sticking around looting, cheating and capturing individuals.

 

III. Complete the following:

1) The woman in a white sari was totally a stranger. But Arun developed an instant liking for her the moment she spoke to him.
Ans: Notice three things that Arun preferred about this lady. The lady was wearing a basic way. She had dim kind eyes. There was a pride about her that deserved admiration. The quietness of her face, the profound delicate relieving voice intrigued Arun.

 

2) Arun says, “I had taken an instinctive dislike to Satish’s mother.”
Ans: Notice three things that made Arun disdain her. Satish's mom had an overwhelming character. She was glad and overbearing. Her discussion and her offending conduct made Arun loathe her.

The sequence of events has been jumbled up. Rewrite them according to the sequence in the lesson:

Ans: Now tired of this game and of ambling about the platform, I sat down on my suitcase and gazed dismally across the railway-tracks.

1.     ‘She told a coolie to look after my suitcase and then she led me away down the platform.

2.     She drew me out very well, and I had soon forgotten that we were strangers.

3.     I had already forgiven her for lying; and besides, i had taken an instinctive dislike to Satish’s mother.

4.     I looked from Satish’s mother to the woman who had given me tea and sweets and then back at Satish’s mother.

5.     Satish was standing behind his mother, grinning at me, delighting in my clash with his mother.

6.     We placed ourselves at the open windows, and the two women stood outside on the platform talking up to us.

7.     She allowed me to share the benefit of her advice, as she probably didn’t think my ‘mother’ a very capable person.

8.     I looked straight into the eyes of the woman who held my hand, and she smiled in a gentle understanding way.

9.     She stood there on the busy platform; a pale sweet woman in white and I watched her until she was lost in the milling crowd.
