I. Comprehension:

A. Answer the following questions in a sentence or two each:

 1) Name the teams that are to play the cricket match in the lesson.

Ans: MCC and YMU are the teams that are to play the cricket match in the lesson.

 

2) Who were the prominent players in the MCC team?

Ans: The prominent players in the MCC team were Rajam, Mani and Swami.

 

3) Who was the “Tate” of the team? Why was he called so?

Ans:  Swami was the “Tate” of the team. He called so because he was the best bowler.

 

4) Why could Swami not attend the practice in the evenings?

Ans: Swami could not attend the practice in the evenings because he wanted to skip evening drill class,

 

5) What was Swami’s excuse for exempting him from drill for a week?

Ans: Swami said that he was suffering due to delirium and he requested to excuse for exempting him from drill for a week.

 

6) What did Swami request the doctor to give him?

Ans: Swami requested the doctor to give him a Medical Certificate.

 

B. Read the extracts given below and answer the questions that follow:

 1. “There was only one who caused him the deepest anxiety day and night.”

a) Who caused Rajam the deepest anxiety?

b) Why was this so?

 Ans: a) Swami caused Rajam the deepest anxiety.

b) Swami didn’t want to attend evening drill class.

 

 2 “Just seven days before the match, Swaminathan realized that his evenings were more precious than ever.”

 a) What is the match referred to here?

b) Why were the evenings more precious than ever?

 Ans: a) The match referred to here: MCC and YMU.

b) The evenings were more precious than ever because only one week left for the match.

 

3. “But contrary to the custom, he had not taken off his coat and cap.”

a) Why did Swami not take off his coat and cap?

b) What happened soon after?

 Ans: a) Swami did not take off his coat and cap because he wanted to get excuse form drill master to skip evening class.

b) The drill master did not excuse Swami and asked him to get ready for drill.

 

 4. “Well, I could do it. But is there anything wrong with you?”

a) Who is speaking to Swami in these lines?

b) Was there anything really wrong with Swami?

c) What is the real purpose of Swami’s visit?

 Ans: a) The doctor is speaking to Swami in these lines.

b) No, there wasn’t anything wrong with Swami.

c) Swami wanted to get excuse from his drill classes in the evening, for that Swami requested doctor to provide a false medical certificate so that he could handover it to his Head Master.

 

5. “I can’t give you the certificate. But I shall talk to your Head Master about you and request him to let you off after four-thirty. ”

a) Why does the doctor refuse to give a certificate?

c) Do you think the doctor was kind to Swami?

 Ans: a) It would be prosecuted if the doctor provided false Medical Certificate to Swami. So, the doctor refused to a certificate.

b) The doctor offered to communicate with the Head Master and request him to leave him early from school.

c) Yes, the doctor was kind to Swami but didn’t entertain him to provide fake certificate.


C. Answer the following questions in about six or eight sentences each:

 1) How did Swami manage to get the permission of the drill master?

Ans: Swami was the “Tate” due to his best bowling and there was very less time remaining for the cricket match, and everyone had to be part of practice sessions. But Swami was not interested to be the part of sessions and he wanted to skip those. Swami went to his Drill Master and requested him to excuse him from the practice but master was not ready excuse him and he asked him to be the part of drill but Swami said that his doctor had advised him to not to be part of physical exercise, after those conversation the drill master finally permitted Swami to skip the drill class for a week.

 

 2) What was Swami’s plan to get exemption from drill for a week?

Ans: Swami was aware of his Drill Master, he would not exempt from drill for a week. So, he planned to exempt for it. He decided to visit a hospital and get a fake certificate, and then he went to hospital and met doctor and asked him to provide a false medical certificate. But the doctor refused to give him a fake certificate because it was the act of prosecution.

 

3) How did the doctor promise to help Swami?

Ans: Swami was not interested to be the part of sessions and he wanted to skip those. Swami went to his Drill Master and requested him to excuse him from the practice but master was not ready to excuse him. Swami decided to meet doctor and wanted to get a fake certificate but doctor said him that he could not provide him false certificate and he said that he would talk with his Head Master and inform him to relieve him early from the school and exempt him from drill for a week.

 

Complete the following paragraphs with the help of clues give below:

 1. There lived a king by name Krishna and Queen Radha lived in a very big palace with hundreds of servants and soldiers. Both the King and the Queen were fond of honey. They built a separate storeroom to store a few tins of honey. The king appointed twelve guards to keep watch round the clock.

 

2. One of the guards wanted to eat some of the royal honey. So, he made a secret entry of the storehouse of honey and stole a few tins of honey the queen came, to know of the theft in the palace and demanded her beloved husband to punish the thief .

 

3. In the morning, the next day, the king summoned all the guards at once and ordered them to stand in a line. The king devised a plan to identity the guard who had stolen the honey. He told them in a polite tone that he noticed a pinch of honey on the beard one of the guards. As soon as the king uttered these words, one of the guards lifted up his hand to wipe out his beard. The King observed this act and he told the guard that he was the culprit. Thus, the king was able to detect the thief without any investigation.
