I. Comprehension:
A. Answer in two-three sentences each:
Ans: The old man
Twinkle needed a boy (after school hours) who could help him in his shop and
could drive Jenny, the pony, for all Twinkle’s goods were taken round in the
cart.
2) When did all the boys go to Mr. Twinkle
and what did Mr. Twinkle say?
Ans: All the boys
saw the notice and many of them thought they would try for the job. They met
Mr. Twinkle and he was busy at that time and asked them to play in that yard
till he called them back for interview.
3) What did all the boys do in front of the
house?
Ans: The boys were
excited by seeing an enormous yard gate swinging to and fro in the wind, all
five boys climbed up on the gate. They shouted and pretended to whip the gate
to make it gallop. It swung to and fro, and the boys shouted with delight. The
gate was old and it broke away at the hinges by their weight.
4) What did all the boys decide to tell the
old man if he asked about the broken gate?
Ans: All the boys
decided that they would not tell anything to the old man if he asked about
broken gate.
5) Why didn’t Jack go back home with the
other boys?
Ans: Jack did not
go back home with the other boys because he was worried about the broken gate.
It was dreadful to break a thing and not to tell about it and not even try and
mend it. He wondered if he could mend it. He swung the gate a little to see how
much it was broken.
6) How did the gate break, according to Jack?
Ans: According to
Jack the gate was broken when he swung on it.
7) Jack stared in surprise. What made Jack
stare at Mr. Twinkle in surprise?
Ans: Jack stared in
surprise when the old man Twinkle said that his friends’ names were Harry,
Peter, George and Henry. Jack was dumb at that moment where he was trying to
hide was friends’ names but the old man knew everything.
8) Who was finally chosen to help the old man
Twinkle? Why?
Ans: Jack was
finally chosen to help the old man Twinkle. Mr. Twinkle was so happy to choose
him because he was loyal, brave, honest, sincere and truthful.
9) What is Jack doing now?
Ans: Jack is the
head of the shop now and doing very well indeed.
B. Answer in five-six sentences each:
1) How did the boys break the gate?
Ans: Mr. Twinkle
was busy when boys came for interview and he asked them to play in that yard
till he called them. The boys were excited by seeing an enormous yard gate
swinging to and fro in the wind, all five boys climbed up on the gate. They
shouted and pretended to whip the gate to make it gallop. It swung to and fro,
and the boys shouted with delight. The gate was old and it broke away at the

2) Why did Jack think they ought to tell
about the broken gate to the old man Twinkle?
Ans: The boys were

to the old man if he asked about broken gate but Jack remembered his mother
words and told that one should own up when one did something wrong. Jack
thought to tell the old man Twinkle about the broken gate.
3) What qualities of Jack do you like the
most?
Ans: “Honest is the
best policy”, as per this proverb Jack was an honest boy and he felt very bad
when gate was broken and he was ready to tell truth to Mr. Twinkle whereas his
friends didn’t tell truth. He was loyal to his friends and didn’t reveal his
friends’ names. The best quality which raised his frame was his truthfulness,
he told truth to Mr. Twinkle bravely.
4) How would Jack overcome his weakness,
according to Mr. Twinkle?
Ans: According to
Mr. Twinkle, Jack would grow when Mrs. Twinkle would make pudding every night
for him and it would help him to improve his grades and would his brain grow
too. Jack would buy better clothes as he would get little pocket money.
5) What made Mr. Twinkle choose Jack for the
job?
Ans: No one among
five boys told truth to Mr. Twinkle except Jack about the broken gate. Even
those boys pretended to surprise and didn’t know anything about it. Whereas
Jack was truthful person and he said that he had broken gate and proved himself
as loyal by taking blame on himself. Those all qualities of Jack and attracted
Mr. Twinkle and he chose Jack for the job.
C. Answer the following in ten-fifteen
sentences each:
1) How did Jack win the heart of Mr. Twinkle?
Ans: Jack was an
honest boy and he felt very bad when gate was broken. No one among five boys
told truth to Mr. Twinkle except Jack about the broken gate. Even those boys
pretended to surprise and didn’t know anything about it. Jack was ready to tell
truth to Mr. Twinkle whereas his friends didn’t tell truth. He was loyal to his
friends and didn’t reveal his friends’ names. The best quality which raised his
frame was his truthfulness, he told truth to Mr. Twinkle bravely. Jack was
truthful person and he said that he had broken gate and proved himself as loyal
by taking blame on himself. Those all qualities of Jack and attracted Mr.
Twinkle and he chose Jack for the job. Thus, in such a way Jack won the heart
of Mr. Twinkle.
2) How did a helper boy become the owner of
the shop?
Ans: Jack was an
honest boy and he felt very bad when gate was broken and he was ready to tell
truth to Mr. Twinkle whereas his friends didn’t tell truth. He was loyal to his
friends and didn’t reveal his friends’ names. Jack was finally chosen to help
the old man Twinkle. Mr. Twinkle was so happy to choose him because he was
loyal, brave, honest, sincere and truthful. Those all qualities of Jack and
attracted Mr. Twinkle and he chose Jack for the job. Jack was with him still
but as errand boy. He was a helper boy, but as he was loyal and hard worker, he
put on trust of Mr. Twinkle and he became the owner of the shop.
