III. Answer any FOUR of the following
questions in about 60 words. each:
4 X 3 = 12
18) How does Romeo describe the glory of
Juliet?
Ans:
Romeo is deeply impressed by Juliet’s extraordinary beauty when he sees her at
the Capulet’s feast. He compares her to a
rich jewel set in the ear of an Ethiopian. He says that her beauty makes
the surrounding torches appear brighter. To him, she shines like a precious
jewel against darkness. He also compares her to a snowy dove among crows, suggesting that she is exceptionally
beautiful among the other ladies. Romeo is completely fascinated by Juliet’s
appearance and feels that he has never seen such beauty before.
19) Write a
short note on the dramatic' moment involving Bachni Devi.
Ans:Bachni
Devi plays an important role in the dramatic incident connected with the Chipko Movement. When the contractors
came to cut down the trees, Bachni Devi and other village women strongly
opposed them. They embraced the trees and refused to allow them to be cut.
Their action was a peaceful but powerful form of protest against the
destruction of forests. Bachni Devi’s courage and determination show the
important role played by rural women in protecting nature. The incident also
highlights the close relationship between forests, the environment and the
lives of village people.
20) How should
parents look upon their children according to KahlilGibran ?
Ans:
According to Kahlil Gibran, parents should not consider their children as their
possessions. Children come through their parents but do not belong to them.
They are the sons and daughters of
Life’s longing for itself. Parents may give their children love and
care, but they should not impose their own thoughts, dreams or ambitions upon
them. Children have their own lives and their own future. Parents should allow
them to grow freely and independently. Gibran therefore asks parents to respect
their children’s individuality and guide them without trying to control their
lives.
21) How does Don
Gonzalo recall the beauty of 'The silver maiden'?
Ans:
Don Gonzalo recalls the Silver Maiden as an exceptionally beautiful and
charming young woman. He describes her as having a fair complexion like a lily, beautiful dark eyes and magnificent
black hair. Her appearance was graceful and attractive, and her presence made a
lasting impression on him. He remembers her with great affection and admiration
even after many years. His description reveals that he has preserved her image
in his memory. Through his recollection, the audience understands the depth of
his youthful love and the strong influence that the Silver Maiden had on his
life.
22) How does the
poet explain that one man's love is different from that of others in the poem,
"When you are old"?
Ans:
In When You Are Old, W. B.
Yeats says that many men loved the woman because of her beauty and moments of glad grace. However, the poet claims that
his love was different and deeper. He loved not merely her physical beauty but
also her pilgrim soul and the
sorrows and changes in her face. His love remained sincere even when her
youthful beauty disappeared. Thus, Yeats presents his love as selfless and
lasting. He suggests that true love accepts a person’s inner qualities and
remains faithful even when outward beauty fades.
23) Write a
short note on Tammanna and his possessions according to "The
Gardener".
Ans:Tammanna
was a rich landowner who possessed about one thousand acres of land. He was proud of his property, wealth
and social position. However, he considered his rival Basavaiah to be one of
his important “possessions” because their rivalry gave him a purpose in life.
When Basavaiah took away two hundred acres of his land, Tammanna responded
through literature instead of physical violence. He composed songs and ballads
describing Basavaiah’s actions. Thus, Tammanna’s possessions included not only
land and wealth but also his reputation, creativity and intellectual power.
IV. Answer any
THREE of the following questions in about 100 words each: 3 X 4 = 12
24) "The
criminal has upper hand over the prince of Monaco". Evaluate this
statement with respect to the story. "Too Dear!".
Ans:
The statement is justified by the events in Too Dear!by Leo Tolstoy. The Prince of Monaco sentences a
criminal to death, but the country has neither an executioner nor the means to
carry out the punishment. An executioner is brought from France, but his
charges are too high. The criminal also refuses to escape because he enjoys the
comfortable life provided in prison. Later, when the guard is dismissed, the
criminal demands a pension and leaves the prison. The Prince agrees to all
these demands. Thus, although the Prince is the ruler, he is unable to exercise
his authority effectively. The criminal cleverly takes advantage of the
situation and ultimately gets the upper hand.
25) Write a note
on Navadanya movement and Navadanya farm.
Ans:
The Navadanya movement was
started by Vandana Shiva to protect biodiversity, traditional seeds and the
rights of farmers. The movement encourages the conservation of indigenous seeds
and promotes organic and sustainable agriculture. It opposes the destruction of
biodiversity caused by chemical farming and the dependence on commercially
controlled seeds. Vandana Shiva established the Navadanya Farm in the Doon Valley of Uttarakhand in 1994. The farm
became a centre for conserving traditional varieties of seeds and promoting
biodiversity. It also provides training and knowledge about sustainable
farming. Navadanya therefore aims to protect nature, traditional agricultural
knowledge, food security and the livelihood of farmers. It represents an
important effort to preserve India’s agricultural biodiversity.
26) Describe how
Gonzalo glorifies his cousin's death in the play 'A Sunny Morning'?
Ans: While telling Laura about the duel between the merchant and
the gallant lover, Don Gonzalo says that the young lover was his cousin and
that he was very fond of him. After the duel, the young man took refuge in Don
Gonzalo’s house because he feared the consequences of fighting a person who was
highly respected in the locality. Later, he went to Seville and then to Madrid.
From there, he wrote several letters to Laura, but her parents intercepted
them. Don Gonzalo assumes that Laura did not reply to any of his letters.
Finally, he says that, in despair and believing that he had lost his beloved
forever, his cousin joined the army. He went to Africa, where he met a glorious
death in a trench while grasping the Spanish flag and whispering the name of
his beloved Laura.
27) How does the
rivalry between Tammanna and Basavaiah keep moving from visible domain to the
invisible domain in the story 'The Gardener'?
Ans:
The rivalry between Tammanna and Basavaiah begins in the visible domain with land, wealth and material possessions.
Basavaiah takes away two hundred acres of Tammanna’s land. Tammanna does not
fight him physically. Instead, he composes songs and ballads describing
Basavaiah’s cruelty and becomes famous. Basavaiah then tries to compete with
Tammanna by building a grand house, collecting possessions and inviting poets
and musicians. Gradually, their rivalry moves from material things to the
invisible domain of literary fame,
reputation, pride and psychological power. Tammanna finally realizes
that his greatest weapon is his knowledge and creativity. Thus, their
competition changes from a struggle over land to a deeper battle of the mind
and ego.
28) What changes
does the foot undergo in the shoe in the poem "To The Foot From Its
Child"?
Ans:
In Pablo Neruda’s poem To the Foot
from its Child, the foot undergoes a significant transformation after
entering the shoe. As a child, the foot is innocent, free and unaware of the
limitations of life. When it grows, it enters a shoe and becomes confined
within it. The shoe restricts its natural freedom and movement. Gradually, the
foot becomes accustomed to this confinement and forgets its earlier freedom. It
loses its innocent relationship with nature and becomes a part of the
controlled world of human life. The poem uses the foot and the shoe
symbolically to show how human beings lose freedom and innocence as they grow
and become accustomed to social restrictions.
29) Do you agree
that the play 'A Sunny Morning' deals with the human weakness for lying?
Elucidate with suitable examples.
Ans:
Yes, A Sunny Morning deals with
the human weakness for lying, particularly when people want to protect their
pride and memories. Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura recognize each other when they
meet in the park, but both pretend that they do not know one another. They
invent stories about their past lovers and speak about them as if they were
different people. Gonzalo tells an exaggerated story about the Silver Maiden,
while Laura gives her own version of the past. Both know the truth but
deliberately hide it. Their lies are not intended to harm anyone. Instead, they
help them preserve their dignity, avoid embarrassment and keep their beautiful
memories of youth alive.
