Shiva.

separateness has created many problems in the world. Human beings think that they
are separate from nature and other living beings. This feeling of separation
makes people exploit nature for their own benefit. Cullinan believes that
everything on Earth is connected. Human beings are a part of nature, not its
masters. Therefore, we must respect and protect the Earth and all its living
creatures. We should develop a sense of unity and understand that harming
nature ultimately harms ourselves.
19. How does Doña Laura describe her own death in A Sunny Morning?
Ans: In A
Sunny Morning, Doña Laura tells Don Gonzalo a false story about her own
death. She says that when her lover did not return from America, she went to
the beach early one morning. She wrote his name on the sand and sat on a rock
watching the waves. She says that the sea gradually rose and swept her away,
and thus she died in the ocean. This imaginary story helps her hide her real
identity and also shows the deep sorrow she felt for her lost love.
20. Describe the uniqueness of the poet’s love as
expressed in When You Are Old.
Ans: The poet’s love is unique because he loves the
woman for her inner beauty rather than merely for her physical beauty. He says
that many people loved her moments of happiness and physical beauty. However,
he alone loved her pilgrim soul and the sorrows of her changing face. His love
remains sincere even when she grows old and loses her youthful charm. He
imagines her sitting by the fire and remembering his love. Thus, his love is
deep, selfless and lasting.
21. Write a note on the life of the foot in the shoe as
described in the poem To the Foot from
Its Child.
Ans: The poet describes the foot as a hardworking and
neglected part of the human body. The foot is always inside a shoe and is
rarely seen or appreciated. It performs many important tasks such as walking,
standing and carrying the body. The poet compares the foot to a child growing
inside a shoe. At first, the foot is small, but as it grows, the shoe becomes
uncomfortable. Finally, the foot becomes strong and independent. The poem
celebrates the foot’s silent struggle and importance.
22. ‘The poet creates heaven on earth.’ Discuss this with
reference to Heaven, If You Are Not
Here onEarth.
Ans: In the poem Heaven, If You Are Not Here on Earth, the poet says that heaven
is not somewhere far away. It can be created on Earth through human love,
kindness and goodness. Nature itself is beautiful and gives people happiness.
The poet believes that a person who lives with love and compassion can make the
world heavenly. Good human relationships, peace and beauty make life
meaningful. Therefore, instead of searching for heaven after death, people
should create heaven through their actions and make Earth a better place.
23. Why eating soup is dangerous in Japan, as narrated by
George Mikes?
Ans: According to George Mikes, eating soup in Japan
can be dangerous because Japanese people have a special way of eating it. They
make loud noises while eating soup, which is considered polite and shows that
they are enjoying it. A foreigner may not know this custom and may try to eat
the soup silently. Mikes humorously presents the difficulty faced by foreigners
in understanding Japanese manners. The incident shows how customs differ from
country to country and how visitors may feel confused when they do not know local
traditions.

prison, went to the palace kitchen, collected his food and returned to the
prison. He then shut the door and stayed inside. The Minister of Justice asked
him why he had not escaped when there was no guard to stop him. He also told
him that the prince would not mind if he ran away. The prisoner replied that he
had nowhere to go because his character was ruined and people would reject him.
He had also forgotten the habit of working. If he left the prison, he would
have to work to earn his living. Therefore, he preferred to remain in prison.
25. Do you agree that the play A Sunny Morning deals with the human weakness for lying?
Elucidatewith suitable examples.
Ans: Yes, A Sunny
Morning deals with the human weakness for lying. Doña Laura and Don
Gonzalo meet after many years, but neither reveals their real identity. They
tell false stories about their past to each other. Doña Laura says that her
lover, Rafael, died in the sea while waiting for her. In reality, she is the
same woman whom Gonzalo once loved. Gonzalo also tells a false story about his
past and claims that Rafael died in a duel. Both know the truth but continue to
lie because of pride and fear. Their lies are harmless and humorous rather than
harmful. The play shows that people sometimes lie to hide their feelings,
protect their pride and avoid emotional situations.
26. How did the plantation owner’s lifestyle change after
the arrival of the old man in The
Gardener?
Ans: The arrival of the old man changed the plantation
owner’s life completely. Earlier, the plantation owner was rich and lived a
luxurious and carefree life. He spent his time enjoying himself and did not
care much about the plantation. After the old man came, he began to take
interest in gardening and the plantation. The old man transformed the neglected
land into a beautiful and productive garden. The owner started spending more
time there and became more responsible. He also developed a close relationship
with the old man and respected his knowledge and hard work. The plantation
gradually became prosperous. Thus, the old man brought discipline, purpose and
happiness into the owner’s life and changed his lifestyle from luxury and
idleness to meaningful work.
27. Discuss Borges’s views on poetry.
Ans: Jorge Luis Borges has a unique and deep view of
poetry. He believes that poetry is not simply a collection of words arranged
beautifully. Poetry should create a feeling and touch the reader’s heart. According
to Borges, poetry is as old as language itself and is closely connected with
human life. He believes that a poem should be experienced rather than merely
understood intellectually. The meaning of poetry may be different for different
readers because every reader responds to it in a different way. Borges also
says that poetry can be found in ordinary things and everyday experiences. For
him, poetry gives beauty and meaning to life. He considers poetry a natural and
essential part of human existence.
28. How did the POP campaign team trap Roof in The Voter?
Ans: The POP campaign team trapped Roof by cleverly
using his weakness and his political situation. Roof was the election agent of
the PAP candidate, Marcus Ibe, but he had secretly promised to support the POP
candidate, Maduka. The POP campaign team knew about Roof’s promise. On the
night before the election, they came to his house and offered him fifty pounds
if he would support Maduka. Roof accepted the money but was unwilling to openly
betray Marcus Ibe. The POP team then used a trick. They made Roof put his
thumbprint on a document showing his support for Maduka. Later, they threatened
to expose him if he did not keep his promise. Thus, Roof was caught between
money, loyalty and political pressure.
29. ‘A humble vehicle like a cycle can work wonders in
empowering rural women.’ Explain withreference to Where There Is a Wheel.
Ans: The cycle played an important role in empowering
rural women in Pudukkottai. Earlier, many women depended on men for transportation
and had limited freedom to move outside their homes. Learning to ride a bicycle
gave them confidence, independence and mobility. Women could travel to nearby
villages, markets and workplaces without depending on others. They could sell
goods, earn money and manage their own activities. Cycling also helped them
attend literacy classes and participate more actively in public life. It became
a symbol of freedom and social change. Even poor women could afford a cycle,
making it a powerful means of empowerment. Thus, the simple bicycle brought a
great change in the lives of rural women and helped them become more
independent and confident.
