and culture according to Vandana Shiva.

Ans: The water sit innocently in Bisleri Bottle and
it dances its way into Pepsi man’s bottle.
III. Answer any four of the following questions in about
60 words each : (4×3 = 12)
18) Why did Vandana
Shiva start Navdanya farm?
Ans: Vandana
Shiva learned the value of diversity from the Himalayan forests and stressed
the need to protect biodiversity on farms. She began collecting and preserving
seeds from farmers’ fields and later understood that farmers required a farm
for training and demonstration. Therefore, she established the Navadanya farm
in 1994 in the Doon Valley, situated in the lower Himalayan region of
Uttarakhand. Today, the farm preserves and cultivates about 630 varieties of
rice, 150 varieties of wheat, and hundreds of other plant species. They follow
and encourage biodiversity-rich farming methods that yield more food and better
nutrition per acre.
19) How does Don
Gonzalo recall the beauty of ‘The Silver Maiden’?
Ans: Don
Gonzalo, the brave young man, belonged to Valencia by birth. Close to Valencia
there was a village named Maricela. In that village lived the most beautiful
woman he had ever seen. She was perfect, fair like a lily, with jet-black hair
and dark eyes, and had a very sweet expression. She appeared to spread
brightness wherever she went. Her body was graceful and flawless. She looked
like the ideal beauty shaped by God in human form. She seemed like a dream. In
this way, Don Gonzalo remembered the beauty of the “Silver Maiden.”
20) How is the poet’s
love different from that of others in the poem ‘When You Are Old’?
Ans: In this
poem, W. B. Yeats requests his former lover to think about her youth and his
love for her when she grows old. He asks her to sit by the fireplace and read
the book of memories. He wants her to realize that others loved only her joyful
charm and outward beauty. But the poet loved the pilgrim soul within her and
the sadness of her changing face. When she becomes old, she would softly and
sadly whisper about how love flew over the mountains and hid its face among the
stars. Thus, the poet feels that true love remains eternal even after many
years.
21) What changes did
the foot undergo in the shoe in ‘To The Foot From Its Child’?
Ans: The
child’s foot does not know its own limits. It dreams of becoming a butterfly or
an apple. As it grows, it begins to face difficulties shown through stones,
broken glass, streets, ladders, and rough paths of the earth. These experiences
teach the foot that it cannot fly and cannot become a fruit hanging on a
branch. Slowly, the child’s foot feels defeated, trapped, and forced to live
inside a shoe. Step by step, the foot loses its innocence and comes to
understand the harsh truths of life. It realizes that life is like a blind man.
It loses its natural shape and turns into the form of eyeless creatures, and
later gets covered with the weak volcanoes of death that it had never imagined.
It never realized that it had stopped being a foot.
22) How does the poet
create heaven in Earth, according to Kuvempu?
Ans: The
poet attempts to question the belief about heaven by saying that it is not a
place that exists beyond the earth after death. He wonders that if heaven is
not found on earth, then where else it could exist. According to him, human
beings themselves can turn into gods and nymphs through noble thoughts, good
qualities, and righteous actions, and wherever such people live, that place
truly becomes heaven. He explains the beauty of the earth using images of
swiftly flowing streams, gentle sunshine, moonlit harvest fields, and lovely
gardens. The shining crops under the moonlight look heavenly, making the earth
no less than heaven itself. Through his sweet, nectar-like song, the poet
praises these scenes of nature and creates heaven on earth with his words.
23) How do Japanese
respect one’s privacy, according to Geroge Mikes?
Ans: In the
lesson Japan and Brazil through A Traveler’s Eye, George Mikes
explains the surprising level of respect and privacy seen in Japan. He writes
that even fifteen minutes in Japan would convince anyone that they are among
extremely well-mannered people. The people of Japan live on a very overcrowded
island, and therefore respecting one another’s privacy becomes very important.
He gives the example of small red telephones placed in streets and hotel halls,
where the receiver is kept on a table or counter, as there is no extra space
for telephone booths. A person carries on his most confidential business talks
and even personal love arguments in public, yet in complete privacy. Anyone
could easily overhear, but no one does so in Japan. A man’s telephone receiver
becomes his castle.
IV. Answer any three
of the following questions in about 100 words each: (3×4 = 12)
24) Why did the king
of Monaco keep changing his mind in dealing with the criminal in ‘Too Dear!’?
Ans: Once in
Monaco, a murder took place. The judges gathered and conducted the trial in a
very proper judicial way. The lawyers and jurymen argued and gave their
judgment. Finally, they sentenced the criminal to be beheaded as the law
required. The problem was that they had neither a guillotine to cut off the
criminal’s head nor an executioner. The king ordered an inquiry to hire a
guillotine from France and later from Italy. But hiring it was very costly, so
meetings were held again. They changed the death sentence to imprisonment. The
criminal was kept in a small lock-up, and a guard was appointed to watch him
and bring his food from the palace kitchen. This too was found to be very
expensive. The next committee removed the guard and waited for the criminal to
escape. At last, the council thought carefully and decided that the only way to
get rid of him was to offer him a pension, and the amount fixed was 600 francs.
25) “Fate is
curious”. Justify this statement with reference to ‘A Sunny Morning’.
Ans: Gonzalo
and Dona Laura met in Madrid Park as complete strangers. They blamed each other
about sitting on the same bench and passed annoying comments. When Laura said
that Gonzalo had frightened away the birds that were eating her crumbs, Gonzalo
argued that it was a public park. Laura thought Gonzalo was an ill-tempered
man, but in the end he decided to adjust and sit on the bench with the old
lady. After greeting Laura, Gonzalo began brushing dust from his shoes with his
handkerchief. Laura remarked whether he was using a shoe brush as a
handkerchief, and she also joked that he was taking out a telescope when
Gonzalo removed a reading glass from his pocket. Soon they came to an
understanding. Gonzalo requested Laura to permit him to read and stop talking.
Both of them took a pinch of snuff and sneezed alternately three times each.
Gonzalo read some lovely poems and returned the book to Laura. They slowly
began to recognize one another. “Twenty years pass. He returns. And each,
seeing the other, cries—can it be that this is he? Heavens, is it she?” Then
they gradually revealed the past and created unbelievable romantic stories
about themselves. Laura told Gonzalo that Laura Llorente, “The Silver Maiden,”
was her friend and that she was very unlucky because of a tragic love affair.
Gonzalo told her that the brave lover was his cousin. He described the quarrel
and duel between the gallant horseman and the merchant, his cousin’s escape,
his death in Africa, and how he whispered Laura’s name before dying. Laura then
told him that her friend went to the beach where her lover had risked his life,
wrote his name on the sand, sat on a rock, and was swept away by a roaring
wave. They tried to impress each other and at the same time decided to hide
their true identities. However, they failed, and their identities were
revealed. Gonzalo and Laura did not speak, but their smiles while waving
goodbye showed everything. The play highlights the situation of Gonzalo and
Laura, and the playwright humorously presents the story with many witty remarks
and incidents.
26) “Man lives for
some kind of vengefulness. Without it, there would be no reason for his
existence.” Evaluate this statement in the light of the story ‘The Gardener’.
Ans: Tammanna
and Basavaiah were enemies. They competed with each other, and at first all
their competitions appeared healthy. Later, the rivalry began to take a new
turn. Tammanna searched for a way that could defeat Basavaiah completely. He
got the idea of putting all his experiences into ballads and singing them. The
rivalry between Tammanna and Basavaiah moved from the visible world to an
invisible and abstract level, where Basavaiah felt humiliated. However,
Basavaiah began filling his life with all kinds of material riches. Tammanna
became ill, and his illness was Basavaiah’s wealth. He thought of punishing
Basavaiah even more, and that was through his own death. He believed that only
his death could ruin Basavaiah. So, he gave up everything and went away. A few
days after Tammanna left, Basavaiah died. Tammanna forgot all his songs and
ballads. He finally understood that human relationships depend on strange
things like challenge, rivalry, and revenge.
27) What are the feelings of Borges about his mother?
Ans: Borges’
mother, Dona Leonor, was an extraordinary woman. She was very loving and kind
to him. He felt that the secret of true happiness belonged to his mother.
Perhaps he should have been more caring and understanding toward her. He
believed that this is true for all children—when their mother dies, they
realize that they had taken her for granted, just as they take the moon, the
sun, or the changing seasons in a casual way. They feel that they have treated
her poorly. Before a mother’s death, this realization does not occur to them.
Borges’ mother was an intelligent and graceful woman. She had no enemies.
28) Both, the voters
and the candidates are corrupt in Umuofia.
Ans: Five
years earlier, the voters had cast their votes freely without asking for
anything. Some time ago, Marcus Ibe was not a successful teacher. He wisely
entered politics when it reached his village. Now he had become the chief, the
honourable. He owned two long cars and had recently built the largest house in
the village. Yet, his village had no running water or electricity. He had
recently set up a private power plant to supply electricity only to his new
house, called “Umuofia Mansions.” He lived a luxurious life and celebrated the
opening of his mansion by killing five bulls and many goats to entertain
people. The ruling party government had made many promises, but none were
fulfilled; only empty assurances remained. When the next election came, the
voters were ready to try a new method. They began to demand money in return for
their votes. There were five elders in the room along with Roof and his
assistant. Roof was the most trusted among the campaign workers. On the floor,
in front of each elder, two shilling coins lay shining in the yellow light of
the glass chimney. Chief, the honourable Marcus Ibe, had taken five months’
salary in advance to run the secret campaign. But the voters felt that two
shillings was insulting, as Marcus was not a poor man. They believed Marcus was
a wealthy leader and decided to take as much as they needed. Each voter was
given five pounds. The election and voting process became a mockery of
democracy. Roof was only a tool in this mockery. Roof stood in the polling
station holding his ballot paper. He had decided to go back to the other
candidate and return the five pounds because he could not betray Marcus even
secretly. He was trapped, unsure whether it was right or wrong to vote for
Marcus or Maduka. It was difficult for him to decide at once. Roof folded the
ballot paper, tore it into two along the crease, placed one half in each box,
and confirmed aloud, “I vote for Maduka.” Thus, the voter was justified in
demanding money to vote for Marcus Ibe.
29) Explain the
economic implications of cycling among the women in Pudukkottai.
Ans: In his
essay Where There is a Wheel, P. Sainath explains the hope and
positivity that cycling has brought into the lives of women in Pudukkottai, a
poor district of Tamil Nadu. The district’s literacy movement, called Arivoli
Iyakkam, motivates women to learn cycling by organizing bicycle training camps.
Cycling has given these women confidence along with freedom of movement and has
helped to increase their income. Women now sell farm products not only in their
own villages but also in nearby villages. They no longer have to depend on
irregular buses or walk long distances, which helps them save time and energy.
They can finish their work more easily and quickly and are able to carry their
children, farm produce, and even two pots of water on their bicycles, thereby
effectively managing many of their daily difficult tasks.

soap, incense sticks, and various skincare products. Because of its economic
importance, sandalwood has also become one of the most protected tree species
in India.
To prevent illegal
trade, the government has implemented strict regulations on cutting and

B) Imagine you are the secretary of the
college union. Your college has organized an ‘Anti-drug Awareness Programme’
and you are asked to deliver a speech on ‘The evil effects of drugs on youth’.
Prepare a speech in about 120 words using the information given below: (5)
Drug is an addiction – weakens our body and mind – affects brain –
results in poor concentration – learning becomes difficult – influences to
commit crimes – risk of imprisonment.
Ans: Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,
Good morning to everyone present here. I am the secretary of the
college union, and today I feel honoured to speak on the topic “The Evil Effects of Drugs
on Youth” as part of our Anti-drug Awareness Programme.
Drugs are a dangerous addiction that slowly destroys both the body and
the mind. Once a person becomes addicted, it becomes very difficult to escape
from its grip. Drugs weaken our physical strength and reduce our mental
ability. They badly affect the brain and disturb its normal functioning. As a
result, concentration becomes poor and learning becomes very difficult,
especially for students.
Drug addiction also affects a person’s behaviour. Many young people
under the influence of drugs are easily pushed into committing crimes such as
theft, violence, and illegal activities. This can lead to serious consequences
like arrest and imprisonment, which can completely ruin their future and bring
shame to their family.
Youth is the most valuable stage of life. It is the time to build our
career and character. Therefore, we must stay away from drugs and choose a
healthy lifestyle. Let us promise ourselves to say no to drugs
and help others do the same.
Thank
you.
