THINK ABOUT THE TEXT

1) ‘Mutiny is an ugly word’, says, Diego. Is mutiny an ugly .word? If so, why?
Ans: No, it's not the word itself that's ugly. It's Diego's feeling towards the mutiny that carries the ugliness. Mutiny, which means a rebellion, deeply unsettled him. He despised the rebellious actions of the seamen, and that's why he expressed himself in such a way.

2) ‘Columbus feels that whatever he does, it is God’s will’. What ‘will’ of God does he like to fulfill through this venture?

Ans: Columbus had unwavering faith in God, believing deeply in His guidance. He felt it was God's will for him to discover a new world and deliver it to his King and Queen. Columbus believed that God had placed the desire within him to unravel the mysteries of the unknown, and that fulfilling this mission was his divine calling.

5) Usually, people feel desperate when they fail to get something they want. In the play ‘The Discover’, why do the crew-mates of Columbus feel desperate?

In their eyes, risking so much for an uncertain outcome felt pointless, leaving them in a state of despair.

Ans: While Columbus may seem impatient with the seamen, we must acknowledge his immense patience in pursuit of his goal. Unlike the seamen who are ready to abandon the journey, Columbus stands firm, embodying the virtues of purity, patience, and perseverance. His purity stems from his belief that the expedition is God's will, and he pursues it with unwavering determination. It's important to remember that, like the seamen, Columbus is also far from home and family, yet he remains resolute. As the captain, the weight on his shoulders is far heavier, constantly facing doubt and stress. Yet, Columbus endures it all, driven by his deep love for his work and his faith in God's mysteries.

www.educsector.com

3) How did Pepe show his loyalty to Columbus?
Ans: Pepe was the lone figure who still had faith in Columbus and sought to warn him of the growing desperation among the crew. When the seamen charged with intent to kill Columbus, Pepe boldly stood in their way, arms spread wide, declaring that they would have to kill him first. His unwavering loyalty shamed the others. Pepe admired Columbus for his vision, principles, and steadfast commitment to duty, discipline, and loyalty. As a man of great leadership, Columbus naturally drew Pepe to his side, and Pepe always desired to be in his company.

4) ‘Devil’s track to nowhere says Guillermo. What does this suggest about the thinking of the seamen?

Ans: Guillermo and the other sailors believe Columbus is stubbornly refusing to alter his course, viewing his adherence to his vision and dream as foolish. They are convinced that continuing their voyage will only lead to a futile path of self-destruction. In their eyes, their current route is a devil's path leading nowhere. This attitude reveals that the sailors have reached their breaking point and are no longer willing to endure the journey.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN 5-6 / 8-10 SENTENCES EACH:

1) How does Columbus deal with the mutiny on the ship?
Ans: In confronting the mutiny, Columbus demonstrates the true essence of leadership. He remains composed even when faced with the threat to his own life. As Guillermo and the other sailors advance menacingly, it is Columbus's commanding voice that holds them back. He attempts to reason with them, explaining to Guillermo that just as he obeys the orders of the Spanish Royalty, Guillermo should respect his authority as captain. When this reasoning fails, Columbus is deeply disheartened. He confides in Pepe, expressing that a visionary must often endure solitude, with few, if any, companions on their journey

2) What did the crew want to do to Columbus? Why did they not succeed in their plan?

Ans: The exasperated crew, intent on forcing Columbus to end the voyage, plans to confine him in irons. However, Pepe’s brave intervention prevents them from succeeding. As Diego and the others rush towards the stairs with the intent to either imprison or throw Columbus overboard, Pepe positions himself at the foot of the stairs, arms outstretched in a resolute stand. His clear display of support inspires Pedro to also pledge his loyalty, followed by Juan and Francisco. Guillermo and the others gradually relent, averting what could have been a bloody confrontation thanks to Pepe's decisive action.

3) Describe the qualities that made Columbus a great sailor and explorer.
Ans: Columbus stands out as an exceptional sailor, maintaining his composure while the other sailors lose their patience over the prolonged voyage. His firm belief in his mission, despite facing initial setbacks and challenges, ultimately leads him to success. Columbus excels in managing those under his command, demonstrating a keen understanding of each sailor's mindset, from the seamen to Pedro. His ability to navigate both the seas and the complexities of his crew cements his status as a remarkable sailor and explorer.

www.educsector.com

4) “Discipline knows no buts”. What made Columbus says this?
Ans: Columbus learns that the sailors have been speaking disparagingly about him, even discussing his demise. Determined to address the rebellion, he instructs Francisco to bring Guillermo to him. Francisco, worried about escalating tensions, tries to dissuade Columbus from taking severe action. In response, Columbus asserts, 'Discipline knows no excuses.' He emphasizes that no matter the circumstances, the sailors' lack of discipline cannot be tolerated.

5) Illustrate how Columbus and his seamen differed in their views in the voyage of ‘The Discovery’.

Ans: Columbus was driven by ambition and a grand vision of discovering a new world. His optimism, hope, and courage fueled his voyage, and he remained resolute in his course despite his crew’s objections. Loyal to the Royal Sovereigns of Spain, he embodied discipline and authority as a captain. In stark contrast, many of the seamen did not share his vision or enthusiasm. They were pessimistic and fearful of losing their lives at sea, believing Columbus was risking their safety for the sake of his dream. Angry, frustrated, and narrow-minded, they even plotted to kill Columbus, throw him overboard, and return to Spain. They urged him to turn back, lacking the discipline, loyalty, and obedience expected of them.

6) “Patience has its limits.” Substantiate the statement in view of the seamen’s desperation.
Ans: Herman Ould’s play The Discovery dramatizes the dramatic events of the final night of Christopher Columbus’s expedition in search of a sea route to India. At the beginning of the play, the crew is already restless, and as the story progresses, their frustration escalates towards a potential mutiny. Columbus depicted as authoritative and stern, is a strict disciplinarian who fails to empathize with the crew's plight. The sailors, exhausted and disheartened after being away from home for so long without sighting land, grow increasingly irate. Among them, Diego emerges as a vocal dissenter, expressing to Pedro that patience has its limits and that the entire crew is fed up and eager to return to Spain.
