Indian agriculture. Some are remarkably vast, and watching the sunrise or
sunset over them is truly a breathtaking experience.
29.
“Lochinvar finally won Ellen for himself”.- Justify.
Ans: Lochinvar,
a valiant and noble knight, came unarmed yet fearless—steadfast in love and
courageous in battle. He crossed the River Eske and boldly entered Netherby
Hall, where the bride’s relatives and friends had gathered. When questioned,
Lochinvar calmly replied that he had only come to dance a measure, share a cup
of wine, and bid farewell to Ellen. Ellen lifted the goblet, kissed it, and
handed it to him; he drank swiftly and set the cup aside. A smile played on
Ellen’s lips, though tears shimmered in her eyes. Lochinvar gently took her hand,
and they began to dance. As they moved together, he whispered softly to her,
guiding her toward the hall’s entrance. Outside, his horse waited; in one swift
motion, they mounted and galloped away. Though the Netherby clan gave chase,
they could not catch them. In the end, Lochinvar had claimed Ellen as his own.

“The stolen boat experience was a long lasting memory in the mind of William
Wordsworth.” Explain.
Ans: As William Wordsworth rowed the boat under the moonlight, he
heard the distant echoes of the surrounding mountains. The boat glided
smoothly, leaving behind a sparkling trail in the moonlit water. His gaze
remained fixed on the rugged ridge—the farthest edge of the horizon. Like a
hero weighed down by a guilty conscience after a moment of stolen joy, he began
to feel uneasy. Above him stretched only the stars and the grey, silent sky.
The boat, likened to a magical elfin pinnace, moved gracefully like a swan
across the water. A sense of fear crept over him for having taken the boat
without permission. Then, from the horizon's edge, a massive, dark peak rose,
growing larger and looming between him and the sky. Shaken, he rowed back with
trembling hands and quietly returned the boat to its place. But the towering,
mysterious image of that peak lingered in his mind, haunting his thoughts and
disturbing his sleep.

owed his allegiance to Duryodhana. He expressed that it was impossible for him
to join the Pandavas, as he must remain true to his own heritage. He insisted
that the Grandsire must allow him to fulfill this debt with his life, for the
love and trust Duryodhana had shown him. Karna admitted that both he and
Duryodhana had made grave mistakes in their words and actions, but now he
sought forgiveness from the Grandsire, hoping for his blessings.
33.
“No Nazis were seen on the stage, but their ominous presence made itself felt
very minute.” Illustrate.
Ans: When the
play premiered simultaneously in seven German cities, no one knew what kind of
response the audiences would have. The drama unfolded in its eight short
scenes. All that could be heard was the heavy sound of Nazi boots marching up
the stairs to raid the hiding place. The packed audiences absorbed Anne Frank’s
tragedy in a silence thick with regret. They remained seated, as if afraid of
the light outside, too ashamed to face one another. The play stands as a
powerful condemnation, expressed in the most humble, sorrowful terms, of
humanity's cruelty toward one another. No one accuses us, as Germans; we accuse
ourselves.
OR
Write
a short note on the views expressed by the writer on the tragic comedy of
‘development’. Why does he call it tragic comedy?
Ans: There’s an
impressive selection of sleek new car models available, but the advertising
billboards in our cities are in poor condition and only deteriorating. Stylish
luxury resorts for the wealthy are sprouting up everywhere, while public spaces—like
parks and playgrounds—are rapidly shrinking. The same decline is evident in
many other public services, including transportation, healthcare, and
education. The growing trend is to push even the most vital services into the
private sector, where profits can be made at the expense of public access. As a
result, the poor are increasingly being turned into consumers of goods and
services that are becoming ever more expensive.

Answer the following questions in seven to eight sentences each. 3x4=12
40.
List the values which the poet-father wants the teacher to teach his son. (Any eight)
Ans: All men are
not just, all men are not true. For every scoundrel there is a hero. Every
selfish politician there is a dedicated leader. Every enemy there is a friend.
Teach him to learn to lose. Teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Teach him
the wonder of books. It is far honourable to fail than cheat. To have faith in
his own ideas. Gentle with gentle, and tough with tough. Strength not to follow
the crowd. Listen to all men and filter what he hears on screen of truth. There
is no shame in tears. To close his ears to howling mob. Have the courage to be
impatient.
41.
“ The write compares Della’s hair to Queen of Sheba’s jewels and Jim’s watch to
King Solomon’s treasure.” Explain
Ans: There were
two possessions that they both cherished above all else. One was Jim's gold
watch, a family heirloom passed down from his father and grandfather. The other
was Della’s beautiful hair. The queen of Sheba resided in the flat across the
airshaft. Della sometimes imagined letting her hair hang out of the window to
dry, just to make the queen’s jewels and gifts seem insignificant in
comparison. If King Solomon had been the janitor with all his treasure stashed
away in the basement, Jim would have proudly displayed his watch every time he
passed, just to watch the king tug at his beard in envy.
Or
“Pasteur
conducted an experiment to show the difference between Pure and stale air”.
Elaborate.
Ans: Pasteur
conducted an experiment to demonstrate the difference between pure and stale
air. He filled several bottles with broth, taking some into a small hotel room
where the air rarely changed. He broke the necks of the bottles, allowing air
to enter freely, and after a few minutes, resealed them. He then took other
bottles into a nearby field and repeated the process. Lastly, he opened some
bottles at the top of a high mountain and sealed them again. When the bottles
were examined later, those opened in the hotel room were filled with broth that
had completely spoiled and grown moldy. The bottles opened in the field were
also moldy, but not as severely. However, the bottles opened on the mountain
showed no signs of contamination at all.
42.
Describe the uncertainty and disorganization among the players of the village
cricket match.
Ans: Doubt and
confusion clouded the minds of the warriors of Fordenden. The Blacksmith,
having forgotten about his sprained ankle, suddenly started running. The baker
followed suit, and from the opposite direction, Joe also began his journey.
Both the blacksmith and the baker ran, their heads not only turned upward but
also constantly looking back. The three collided with a resounding clang. The
invaders were just as uncertain. Mr. Hodge struggled to make a clear decision.
Major Hawker, Boone, Livingstone, and Southcott all raced toward the ball. Mr.
Hodge shouted at Livingstone to catch it, but Southcott, a disciplined
cricketer, came to a sudden stop. Changing his mind, Mr. Hodge then ordered
Southcott to catch the ball. However, Livingstone didn’t hear the second
command and continued running, leading to a collision between the two.
Or
Explain
with examples, why Gandhiji says that a moral acts should be done without
compulsion.
Ans: A moral act
is not simply one that is performed with good intentions; it must also be
carried out freely, without any sense of compulsion. There is no morality in
acting out of fear, such as rushing to work because you're afraid of losing
your job if you're late. Similarly, living a simple, modest life is not
inherently moral if you have no choice but to do so. A lifestyle of simplicity
becomes moral when those who have the means to live luxuriously choose to live
modestly, driven by a genuine desire to alleviate the suffering and inequality
in the world. It is not moral for an employer to pay higher wages or show
sympathy to employees out of fear that they might leave. True morality comes
when an employer genuinely cares for the well-being of his employees, treating
them with kindness, recognizing that his success is tied to their contribution.
In essence, for an act to be truly moral, it must be free from fear and
coercion.
XI.
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below:
1x4=4(x+2)
43.
Many words in the dictionary have nearly disappeared from spoken language. Some
words that were once used to name certain things disappeared as new inventions
replaced the old. Other words have disappeared because people say things differently
today. These changes take place gradually as, over the years, the new word
becomes popular and the old word is used less and less until it finally
disappears.
When
automobiles were invented, certain vehicles of transportation began to disappear. The words surrey, gig,
buckboard, brougham, carriage, buggy, shay, calash, chaise, cariole and
tilburgar rarely heard today. These words were once used to name different
kinds of horse drawn vehicles. You may encounter these words when reading, but
you seldom hear them today.
Questions:
a)
Why do some words disappear from spoken language?
Ans: Some words
that were once used to name certain things disappeared as new inventions
replaced the old. Other words have disappeared because people say things
differently today.
b)
What were the words used to name different kinds of horse-drawn vehicles?
Ans: The words
surrey, gig, buckboard, brougham, carriage, buggy, shay, calash, chaise,
cariole and till bury.

44.
a) The effect of plastic pollution on marine life- Measures to be taken.
Ans: Plastic pollution has become one of
the most significant environmental challenges of the 21st century. The
widespread use of plastic products and their improper disposal have led to a
massive accumulation of plastic waste in our oceans. Marine life is severely
affected by this pollution, with numerous species facing grave risks. Plastics,
particularly single-use items like bottles, bags, and packaging, often end up
in the ocean, where they are mistaken for food by marine animals.
The ingestion of plastic debris by marine creatures such as
fish, turtles, and seabirds can be fatal. Once ingested, plastic does not break
down easily and can lead to internal blockages, malnutrition, or even death.
Moreover, plastics in the ocean degrade into microplastics, which are tiny
particles that are ingested by even the smallest marine organisms, ultimately
entering the food chain and affecting human health as well.
Another impact of plastic pollution is the destruction of
marine habitats. Plastic waste, especially larger items like nets and fishing
gear, can damage coral reefs and the seafloor. These ecosystems, which are
crucial for many marine species, can take years to recover from such damage.
Additionally, plastic items can carry harmful chemicals, which may contaminate
water and soil, further threatening marine and terrestrial life.
To combat this growing problem, several measures must be
taken. First, there is a need for stricter regulations on plastic production
and disposal. Governments should implement bans on single-use plastics and
encourage the use of biodegradable alternatives. Public awareness campaigns can
educate people about the importance of reducing plastic waste and promoting
recycling. Additionally, organizations and communities should organize beach
clean-up drives to remove plastics from coastal areas and prevent them from
entering the ocean.
Technological innovations such as machines that collect
plastics from the ocean and the development of more efficient recycling methods
can also play a significant role in addressing plastic pollution. Finally,
international collaboration is necessary to create global solutions to this
widespread issue. Only through collective efforts can we reduce plastic
pollution and protect marine life for future generations.
In conclusion, plastic pollution is a major threat to marine
ecosystems, but with concerted global action, we can mitigate its impact. By
reducing plastic usage, improving waste management, and promoting environmental
awareness, we can preserve the oceans and the diverse life that depends on
them.
b)
Artificial Intelligence- Its merits and demerits.
Ans: Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers
to the ability of machines to perform tasks that would typically require human
intelligence. This includes learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and even
understanding natural language. AI is rapidly changing the way industries
function and has made significant advancements in various sectors such as
healthcare, finance, education, and entertainment. However, like all
technologies, AI brings both benefits and challenges.
One of the primary advantages of AI is its ability to
improve efficiency and productivity. AI systems can perform repetitive tasks at
a much faster rate than humans, which helps increase the overall productivity
of industries. For example, in manufacturing, AI-powered robots work around the
clock, minimizing human labor and maximizing output. In healthcare, AI is used
to analyze medical data and assist doctors in diagnosing diseases more
accurately and quickly.
Moreover, AI can handle complex tasks that would be
difficult or impossible for humans. For instance, AI is used in space
exploration, where it helps analyze vast amounts of data from space missions.
In addition, AI can be used to predict trends and make decisions based on data,
which is particularly useful in sectors like finance and marketing.
However, despite its numerous benefits, AI also presents
several demerits. One of the most significant concerns is the potential loss of
jobs. As AI systems take over repetitive and manual tasks, many workers may
find themselves displaced, leading to unemployment and economic instability.
This is particularly concerning in sectors where human labor is currently
crucial, such as retail and transportation.
Another major issue is the ethical implications of AI. Since
AI relies on data, biased data can lead to biased decisions. For example, AI
systems used in law enforcement or hiring can perpetuate existing prejudices,
leading to unfair outcomes. There is also the concern that as AI systems become
more advanced, they may surpass human intelligence, creating unforeseen
consequences and risks.
Lastly, AI raises concerns about privacy and security. As AI
systems gather and analyze vast amounts of personal data, there is the
potential for misuse or hacking, putting individuals’ privacy at risk.
In conclusion, while AI offers significant advantages in
terms of efficiency and innovation, it also poses challenges that need to be
carefully addressed. It is essential to strike a balance between utilizing AI’s
potential and mitigating its risks, ensuring that it benefits society as a
whole.
