Frustrated, the poet looks around, ready to shout at her, but her question
stops him, what else could an old woman like her do in those miserable bills.
He turns to her and is stunned by her sunken, bullet-hole-like eyes and her

small coin in her hand.

IV.
Answer any three of the following
questions in about 100 words each. 3x4=12
24.
How did the animals
cheat the man repeatedly in ‘The
Gentlemen of the Jungle?’
Ans: The saying "You can fool people for
a time, but not forever" is a well-known truth. In this story, the main
character gives a clever reply to those who think he is easy to trick.
The man lived in a small hut at the edge of a forest.
One day, during a storm, an elephant asked for shelter. It wanted to keep its
trunk inside the hut to stay dry. The man, feeling sorry for the elephant,
agreed but said the hut was small, so only its trunk and he could fit. He told
the elephant to be gentle while putting its trunk inside. However, the elephant
took advantage of the man's kindness, pushed its whole head into the hut, and
threw the man out into the rain.
The man got upset, and the animals in the forest
gathered to see what was happening. A loud argument broke out between the man
and the elephant. Hearing the noise, the lion, the king of the forest, arrived
and set up an Enquiry Commission to look into the situation. Because no one
from the man's side was in the Commission, the elephant won the case, and the
man was ordered to build a new hut.
The man built another hut, but this time, a rhinoceros
took it over. Once again, an Enquiry Commission was formed, and the man lost
the case, being told to build yet another hut. This happened several times,
with different animals taking over the huts the man built.
Finally, the man thought carefully and came up with a
plan. He built a bigger and better hut at a distance. As soon as the rhinoceros
saw it, it rushed in, only to find that the elephant was already there. Soon,
other animals also came in, and they all started fighting for space inside the
hut. While the animals were busy fighting, the man set the hut on fire and
burned it down, along with the animals inside.
This story shows that even though the animals tricked
the man for a while, his patience and cleverness led him to outsmart them in
the end. It proves the saying: "You can fool people for a time, but not
forever."
25.
“The world has more evil than good”. Elaborate this statement in the light of the story ‘Oru Manushyan’.
Ans: The statement "The world has more
evil than good" can be understood through the story Oru Manushyan, which
shows the struggle between a kind person and the cruelty of society.
In the story, the main character is a kind-hearted man
who tries to help others and do good. However, even though he genuinely wants
to help, people take advantage of his kindness. His good actions are met with
selfishness and exploitation, which eventually lead to his downfall. This shows
that while there are good people in the world, the evil, selfishness, and
cruelty in society often overshadow the good.
The story shows how, despite the man's efforts, the
world around him is full of people and systems that use his goodness for their
own gain. These forces of greed, selfishness, and corruption make it difficult
for goodness to thrive.
In conclusion, Oru Manushyan suggests that evil often
dominates good in the world. It shows that, even with good intentions, a person
may face a harsh world where evil seems stronger than goodness.
26.
Why does the poet say “We must regain our sanity”
in the poem ‘Money Madness?’
Ans: In the poem Money Madness, the poet
says, "We must regain our sanity" to show how society’s obsession
with money has made people lose their sense of balance and reason. The poet
believes that many people have become so focused on making money and gaining
wealth that they have forgotten about the more important aspects of life, such
as love, compassion, and moral values. This obsession leads to selfishness,
greed, and a lack of empathy towards others.
By saying "We must regain our sanity," the
poet is urging people to stop letting money control their lives. He wants
society to recognize that the constant desire for more money is causing harm,
both to individuals and to the world. The poet calls for a return to
sanity—where people can focus on things that truly matter and live in a way
that promotes kindness, fairness, and shared well-being, rather than simply
pursuing wealth.
27.
How does Babar Ali put his father’s belief “Education is the true religion of man” into practice?
Ans: If we think of religion as a path to living a good life,
Babar Ali's school can be seen as a true form of religion. Ali’s school gives
children in the village the opportunity to live meaningful and virtuous lives.
If we see religion as something that brings people together, regardless of
their differences, the education offered at Ali’s school does just that. It
helps the more fortunate, like Ali, support those who are less fortunate. If we
think of religion as inspiring selfless actions, the education at Ali’s school
fits that description too. Ali and many other young people work selflessly to
help others. Instead of following a traditional, ritualistic religion, it feels
more fulfilling to treat education as a form of religion and focus on doing
good for others. In this way, Ali’s school shows that education can be just as
powerful and meaningful as religion itself.
28.
Sketch the character of Mara in the play ‘Watchman of the Lake’.
Ans: The title of the play Watchman of the Lake by R.K.
Narayan refers to a common man, Mara, who plays a key role in the creation of a
lake. The one-act play tells the story of Mara, who, despite facing strong
opposition, ensures the lake is built and sacrifices himself to prevent it from
overflowing and flooding the king’s capital. The play focuses on Mara’s vision,
inspired by the Goddess, who tells him that a tank must be built for the river
Veda.
Though the Headman tries to stop Mara from meeting the
King, Mara convinces the King to build the lake. He supervises the tank’s
construction, paying close attention to every stone placed. Once the tank is
finished, he protects the lake and the creatures nearby from trespassers,
giving water to the needy as per the king’s rules. He trains his son to take
over as the future watchman.
Mara is god-fearing, loyal, hardworking, fair, and
selfless. He is a man of great determination and courage, willing to sacrifice
his life for the kingdom. He is also fearless, making fun of the Headman when
he insults him. Mara is a blend of dedication, vision, and hard work.
29.
What are the hardships faced by slave children as narrated by Fredrick Douglass?
Ans: The mistress was always angry with the
slaves, especially the mulatto children, and made sure they were punished.
Whenever she thought that her husband was treating his mulatto children better
than the other black slaves, her anger grew even more. She would demand that
these slaves be sold. If the master didn’t agree, he had to punish them
himself, or allow one of his sons to tie up and beat the slaves.
This shows how terribly the slaves suffered at the
hands of both the slaveholder and his mistress. The punishments were cruel and
relentless, and the situation was even worse for the slaves who were the
master's children. In such cases, the slave was treated with even more cruelty,
as the mistress used her power to make sure they were punished for being the
master's children. This created a painful and unfair situation where the slaves
endured not only physical violence but also emotional distress, as their
identity and relationship with the master brought even more suffering. The
lives of the slaves were filled with hardships, as they were constantly at the
mercy of the harsh and unjust treatment from both the slaveholder and his
mistress.

V.30. Read the following passage
and answer the questions set on it. 9x1=9
The Kailasa temple
(Cave 16) is the largest of the 34 Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cave temples and monasteries known collectively as the Ellora
Caves, ranging for over two kilometers along the sloping
basalt cliff at the site.
This temple was built by Krishna I, a Rashtrakuta King in 760 CE. The temple is
located in the Aurangabad district
of Maharashtra.
Usually, buildings
are built from foundation reaching
top of the structure. But this temple is constructed from top to bottom. A megalith
carved from a cliff face, it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in the world because of its size, architecture, and sculptural treatment. It has been called "the
climax of the rock-cut phase of Indian architecture".
This temple
is one of the greatest
Indian architectural wonders.
There are so many interesting things about the
construction of this two-storeyed temple. It is treated as the greatest
monolith structure in the world. The whole temple is cut from an existing single rock hill. Some three million cubic feet of rock seem to
have been chiselled
out so that the great pit was formed. The temple is carved from top and the unwanted
rocks are removed.
Every part of the big temple belongs
to the same rock. One more strange
thing observed about
this temple's construction is that, the remains of the
cut-out rocks are found nowhere
nearby.
In and around this
temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, profuse ornamentation, wonderful composition can be observed. It is a gigantic
sculptural piece of art. There are two artistic pillars in the pavilion which
is the abode of Nandi. Reserve Bank
of India has given a tribute to this wonderful temple. On the reverse side of the INR 20 currency note, there's a striking image of the pillar from the Kailash Temple. Introduced in 2019, this currency
note draws attention to the Ellora Caves.
According to pseudoscience books, there are countless hidden passageways beneath places like Ellora
that once housed energy machines and other ancient technology. It is
said these extraterrestrial machines may have been used to build the enormous temple of Kailasa.

Request to Address Village Issues
Respected
Sir,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am
writing to bring to your attention a few pressing issues that are currently
affecting the residents of our village.
Irregular Drinking Water Supply:
The supply of drinking water in our village has been
inconsistent for the past few weeks. Many households are facing difficulties
due to irregular water supply, especially during the evening hours. I kindly
request the Gram Panchayat to take necessary measures to ensure a regular and
reliable water supply.
Dumping of Kitchen Waste on the Streets:
It has come to our notice that kitchen waste is being
dumped on the streets, leading to unhygienic conditions and attracting stray
animals. This practice is detrimental to the health and cleanliness of the
village. We urge the Gram Panchayat to take action by establishing proper waste
disposal systems and creating awareness among the residents about the harmful
effects of such practices.
Request
for an Additional Anganwadi Centre:
The existing Anganwadi centre in our village is not enough to cater to the
increasing number of children and pregnant women. I kindly request the Gram
Panchayat to consider setting up an additional Anganwadi centre to ensure that
every child and expecting mother receives the necessary care, nutrition, and
services.
I
hope the Gram Panchayat will address these issues promptly and take the
necessary steps to improve the living conditions in our village.
Thank
you for your attention to these matters.
Yours
faithfully,
