FOR ANNE GREGORY
WILLIAM
BUTLER YEATS
THINKING ABOUT THE
POEM
1) What does the young man mean by “great
honey-coloued /Ramparts at your ear?” Why does he say that young men are
“thrown into despair” by them?
Ans: The young man in the poem praises the
extraordinary honey-colored hair of Anne. Anne's hair have been called rampart,
which means a wall. It is called so in light of the fact that they act as a
wall, as they keep young men from looking past those yellow hair and into her
soul. Her hair are appealing to the point that young men can't take a gander at
whatever else. Anne's yellow hair are pretty to such an extent that young men
pitifully become hopelessly enamored with her. She is pretty to such an extent
that everybody needs her, which can't happen; henceforth, they are tossed into
despair.
2) What colour is the young woman’s hair?
What does she say she can change it td? Why would she want to do so?
Ans: Anne s hair are yellow, similar to the
colour of honey. She says that she can change it to dark, brown or carrot; she
implies that she can change it to any colour she needs. Anne says as much to
show that external beauty is alterable and not permanent or true. She needs
young men to glance in her soul and love her for her internal beauty. To do as
such, she needs to show them the triviality of her outer beauty.
3) Objects
have qualities which make them desirable to others. Can you think of some
objects (a car, a phone, a dress…) and say what qualities make one object more
desirable than another? Imagine you were trying to sell an object: what
qualities would you emphasize?
Ans:
People desire objects in view of their
qualities that suit their need. The things we consume, goods we utilize like a
vehicle, a telephone, a dress and so on actual physical qualities matter the
most. Prior to purchasing anything, it is constantly viewed as that the object
is tough and looks pretty. If I somehow happened to sell a dress, I would
choose the one that is extremely interesting to the eye and agreeable for the
body. Then, at that point I would emphasize on the toughness of the dress so
the customer feels that he/she is spending his/her money at the right place and
in the right thing.
