SUMMARY

THE QUALITY OF MERCY

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

William Shakespeare says that the quality of mercy is never influenced by anything. It has descended on earth from paradise like gentle rain for example it is just about as gentle as the raindrop and is sent down on the earth by God himself. Mercy is a gift for both the giver and the taker.

To the giver, the mercy rewards him fame, appreciation and love while to the taker, it is the lifeline, and it helps him to be away from punishment otherwise he would have suffered.

As per the poet, mercy is the most remarkable thing in the universe. It is something which improves a ruler than his crown for example his authority (kingship). He walks with his staff (his staff when moves with him to show his sovereignty) to show his control over his subjects which makes individuals honor him and fear from him.

The might of the ruler may fill fear in the hearts of individuals yet his nature of mercy is superior to his staff in the event that it is in him since it is simply the nature of God. Accordingly if a king is merciful, he will be loved by individuals and dealt like a God.

As per the poet, when a ruler shows mercy, at that point his power become like that of God since it will make even his enemy to adore and regard him. The person who will get mercy will consistently stay thankful to him and individuals will adore him more.
