HOMONYMS / HOMOPHONES

A homonym is one of a set of words that have the same spelling and the same sound but have different meanings.

 

A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but differs in meaning.

 

All homonyms are homophones as they sound the same. However, not all homophones are homonyms. Homophones with different spellings are not homonyms.

HOMONYMS

SAME SPELLING AND THE SAME SOUND BUT HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS.

EXAMPLES

Address – Address

He can give you the address of a lawyer.

That courier was addressed to me.

 

Band – Band

He always ties his books in a band.

Some insects are banded red and green.

 

Bat – Bat

She is frightened of bats.

Match – Match

Mean – Mean
