a) How does Soil erosion occur and what are the chief factors that cause it?
Ans: Soil erosion refers to the erosion of the top layer of dirt known as topsoil, the fertile material vital to life. The rate of soil erosion depends on many factors, including the soil’s makeup, vegetation, and the intensity of wind and rain. Soil erosion occurs primarily when dirt is left exposed to strong winds, hard rains, and flowing water. The various causes of soil erosion are heavy rainfall, slope of land, absence of bunds, removal of the top natural protective layer, the absence of checks to flow water. Soil erosion takes place when water carrying silt mixes with the salt water of the sea. It can be prevented by terracing of lands, constructing bunds, by the practice of contour cultivation and planting appropriate vegetation. To check soil erosion and conservation of rain water from flowing away to waste are two advantages of civilized forests.

b) How are death, menacing threat and Perils of nature described in the story “The Tiger in the Tunnel”?
Ans: 'The Tiger in the Tunnel' is a simple, yet touching story by Ruskin Bond. It depicts the courage and the trials and tribulations of ordinary men like Baldeo who run risks and face the dangers of jungle beasts which prowl at night. He lays down his life in the line of duty so that the train, the night mail, may travel safely with all its passengers. The author has very deftly depicted the eeriness of the jungle at night, with the wild animals lurking in the darkness. The cold night, the stillness, the cutting before the tunnel with its overhanging sheer rocks and the denseness of the jungle, all of these build up an atmosphere suited to the story of Baldeo’s courage, his fight with the tiger, and his death. The story also brings out with a few clever strokes the fears of the boy Tembu, his concern for his father, and then his quick adjustment to being the bread–winner of his poor tribal family after the death of his father. The final touching scene of the story shows Tembu taking up his late father’s duty as a night watchman, holding the sharp axe with which his father had fought his last losing battle with the tiger. He is no longer afraid, yet ready to face any new danger that might confront him. The axe in his hand becomes a symbol – a symbol of commitment to duty and a symbol of man’s lasting war against the forces of nature.

a) How does Henry Derozio depict nationalism and past glory of India in the Poem “To India, My Native Land”?
Ans: The theme of the poem is patriotism. The author talks about the past glory of India and how the country that was called the ‘Golden Eagle’ has been enslaved. All the countries looked up to her for her spiritual leadership. It is too sad that such glory and reverence is not found in her any more. The reason is, she is now bound by the chains of slavery. His purpose is to sing the glory of that heritage of the distant past which is lost and longs for the return as well as hopes for a kind wish from the country and its people. The poet recalls India’s glorious past civilization. Her fame and spiritual message had spread throughout the world. She was worshipped like a goddess. A country that used to soar high like an eagle is now grovelling in the infamous dust. Instead, it leads him to tell a sad tale of her miserable state. The miserable condition of the country does not inspire the poet to sing a song in her praise.

b) Bring out the symbolism presented in the poem “The Road Not Taken”?
Ans: The Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost is a poem narrated by a lone traveler confronted with two roads, symbolizing the journey of life and the decisions we make on that journey. It says that we must carefully take decision as there is no looking back after we have chosen one way, we have to move ahead in that way. The poet decides to explore one road and then come back and explore the other but this might not be possible. The choice of roads in the poem symbolizes the choices that one has to make in life. All the choices appear to be equally attractive. They are confusing too as one cannot foretell the eventual result of one's choice. Through the years, however, we come to find out that the choices we make and the paths we choose, will make all the difference in our lives. It is only after the passage of years, that we can really evaluate the decisions and choices that we make based on the result of these choices. If we find success, the choice is the right one but if the result is failure and pain then the choice has obviously not been the right one.
