PASSIVE VOICE

 

Fill in the blanks with appropriate form of the verbs given in brackets in the paragraphs below.

 

1) The train was on fire. Several people were killed (kill). The injured were shifted (shift) to hospital. The reason for the fire was unclear. A committee was appointed (appoint) to investigate the cause of the fire.

 

2) A function was organized (organize) to honour the eminent scientist professor CNR Rao. He was conferred (confer) the Bharat Ratna. Several dignitaries were invited (invite) to the function. Many of his former students and acquaintances were expected (expect) to attend. Elaborate arrangements were made (make) for the function.

 

3) Saving water is very important. Rain water, being the purest form available, efforts should be made (should, make) to harvest it. The basic purpose of water harvesting is to conserve water. This can be done (can, do) by storing water in aground reservoir. The rooftop harvesting process is quite simple and doesn’t cost much. First the rooftop is cleaned (be, clean), a pipe is inserted (be, insert) and linked to the rooftop as well as the underground reservoirs. Then the water is filtered (be, filter) before it reaches the underground reservoir.

 

4) The bull was tied (tie) to the tree outside Gafur’s house. It was seen (see) by the priest Tarkaratna, who was coming from the zamindar’s house. Gafur was blamed (blame) by the priest for starving the bull. Tarkaratna was sent (send) by the zamindar to talk to Gafur. The rent for the hut was not paid (not pay) by Gafur. The priest told him that if he did not pay it within three days, he would be asked (ask) to leave the hut.
