VERBS

TIME AND TENSE


A verb is defined as a word which shows action or state of being. The verb plays an important role in a sentence. Every sentence of a clause must have a verb. Recognizing the forms of a verb is often the most important step in understanding the meaning of a sentence.

 

Read the following sentences and identify the verbs.


1) I wake up early in the morning.
2) Shreyas is working on his project.
3) Mr. Lingaraj has bought a new car.
4) The dance programme will begin at 4 pm.
5) We went to the circus yesterday.
6) Harini was sleeping when the phone rang.

 

Note: The above sentences indicate simple present, present continuous, present perfect, simple past and future time of action. Try to match the tense forms and the verbs in the sentences given above. Auxiliary verbs are used to indicate present and present continuous actions.

Generally, future action is indicated using simple present or present continuous tenses or modals.

 

1) Sameer goes to Hyderabad tomorrow.

2) Kavya is submitting her assignment by the end of this month.

3) They will announce the results tomorrow.

B. I. Write a paragraph using the information about John’s routine given below.

Ans: John gets up at 5 o’ clock in the morning. Every day, he takes a morning walk for 15 minutes. He studies for 2 hours. Then he takes his bath around 7.30 am. He usually has breakfast around 8.30 am. He attends classes from 10:00 am to 4.30 pm. After coming back from school he watches T.V for an hour. He helps his parents for an hour. He then studies upto 10:00 pm. He usually has dinner after 10:00 pm. He visits his relatives once in a week. He watches movies with his friends once in a month.

 

II. With the above as a model, write a paragraph on your routine.

Ans: I get up at 6 o’ clock in the morning every day. I do yoga for 20 minutes. I take bath around 6.30 am. I study for two hours. I usually take breakfast around 8.30 am. I attend classes from 10 am to 3-00 pm. After coming back from College, I take one hour rest. I go for an evening walk for 20 minutes. I watch TV for an hour between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm. After six o’ clock, I chat with my friends. I study up to 10 pm, and take dinner at 10 pm. I watch movies with my friends twice a month.

 

III. Complete the following sentences with the verbs from the list.

V. Complete the following paragraph choosing the correct form of the verbs given in brackets.
