Come, let us talk about this story:

1)  Say to your partner, the boy or the girl sitting next to you, whether the following ideas are true or not true. Quote words from the text to justify your answer.

a) Kunti was happy after begetting her first child. (True/Not True)

Ans: Not True - Kunti with a heavy heart placed the baby in a basket and set it afloat on the river Ganga.

 

b) It was the Pandavas who did not treat Karna kindly. (True/Not True)

Ans: True -  When Krupa challenged Karna to reveal his parentage at the tournament, Bhima flung hot words at Karna, and Duryodhana befriended Karna.

 

c) Kunti was right in asking Karna to join the Pandavas. (True/Not True)

Ans: True - Kunti said, “It is the Pandavas you should lead, not Duryodhana’s armies. Leave them, come now! Join your brothers; defend them, against the Kauravas. My heart has been heavy within me all these years. Bring me peace now”.

Ans:
Sage Durvasa had taught Kunti a mantra, It was a secret verse to invoke the Gods. When invoked, they would appear before her and bless her with son equal to themselves in glory.

 

b) Whom did Kunti invoke?
Ans: Surya, the Sun God was invoked by Kunti.

 

c) What was Kunti blessed with?
Ans: A child who would prove to the greatest of all heroes was Kunti blessed with.

 

d) What did Kunti do with the child?

Ans: Kunti wondered, she placed the baby in a basket and set it afloat on the river Ganga.

e) Why was Kunti disturbed?
Ans: Kunti was disturbed because the Pandavas would fight against the Kauravas and Karna was on Duryodhana’s side. Karna would fight against his brothers.

 

f) When did Kunti meet Karna to reveal the truth?
Ans: Kunti hurried to the banks of the Ganga, where she knew Karna would be at his morning prayer and she met him there to reveal the truth.

 

g) Why did Karna refuse to leave Duryodhana?
Ans: Karna refused to leave Duryodhana because  When Krupa challenged Karna to reveal his parentage, it was Duryodhana who befriended him and gave him wealth, a kingdom, power, armies more than that he gave him friendship, a lifelong friendship.

 

h) What did Kunti plead with Karna?
Ans: “It is the Pandavas you should lead, not Duryodhana’s armies. Leave them. Come now! Join your brothers, defend them against the Kauravas. My heart has been heavy within me all these years. Bring me peace now”. Kunti pleaded with Karna.

Ans: Krishna told Kunti that war was near and her sons would fight against their cousins and there would be much bloodshed.

 

b) Why did Karna come to dislike the Pandavas?
Ans: Bhima had flung hot words at Karna at the tournament, and Krupacharya demanded him to reveal his parentage. So, Karna disliked the Pandavas.

 

c) How did Duryodhana help Karma?
Ans: Duryodhana who befriended him and gave him wealth, a kingdom, power, armies more than that he gave him friendship, a lifelong friendship.
