Come, let us talk about this story:

1) Look at the points raised in the questions given below. Talk about them to your partner, the boy or the girl sitting next to you. Write down what you say

 

a) The first traveler gave the robbers a good fight. (True / Not True)
Ans: Not True

 

b) The man suffered serious injuries. (True / Not True)
Ans: True

 

c) The sight of the wounded man frightened the priest. (True / Not True)
Ans: True

 

d) Describe the pitiable state of the man in two short sentences.
Ans: The man laid bleeding to death on the side of the road. He was unable to raise his head to beg for help and he was moaning.

 

e) “I don’t want to dirty my hands” Who said this? To whom?
Ans: This was said by the second passerby and he said that to himself.

 

f) “I am sure he is no one I know” was this, a good reason not to help the wounded man?  Justify your answer.
Ans: No, this was not a good reason not to help the wounded man. Every good human being should help any needed person.

 

g) Who helped the wounded man?
Ans:  The wounded man was helped by a Samaritan, who was walking along the road.

 

h) Did this man have a reason not to help the wounded man? If so, what was it?
Ans: No, this man did not have any reason not to help the wounded man. As wounded man and Samaritan were enemies for decades but he kept his enmity side and showed wonderful example of humanity.

 

i) The fourth traveller had noble and generous feelings. (True / Not True)
Ans: True

 

j) There was something special in the fourth man’s act of kindness. What was it?
Ans: Wounded man and Samaritan were enemies for decades because he was Jew but Samaritan kept his enmity side and showed wonderful example of humanity. He showed kindness towards his situation.

 

k) What first aid did the Samaritan give the wounded man? What was the beast of burden in the ancient days?
Ans: Samaritan very gently lifted that man’s head and brushed the dust out of his mouth. He took some water and cleaned the man’s eyes and gave him some water to drink. He put wine on his wounds to clean them and make them heal quickly. Then, he carried the man and put him on to his donkey and brought him into town and arranged an innkeeper to look after him until he was strong again.  The beast of burden in the ancient days was donkey.

 

l) The Samaritan was well-to-do. Give two reasons for this after reading the text.
Ans: The Samaritan had shown pettiness on that wounded man. He carried him on a donkey to town and arranged an innkeeper to look after him.

 

m) Who narrated this parable?
Ans: Jesus Christ narrated this parable.

 

n) What moral lesson did Jesus teach through this parable?
Ans:  The moral lesson Jesus taught though this parable was to love everybody, especially strangers and those who are in need of help.

3) Read these sentences carefully and tell your partner what they mean.

a) If all the four travelers had travelled together, the robbers would not have attacked them.

b) If the Samaritan had not tended the injured man, he would have bled to death.

c) If the Samaritan had not been generous he would not have been money to the innkeeper.

 

4) Now, working with your partner, re-write these pairs of sentences as single sentences.

a)  i) You did not ask me for a loan.

 ii) I did not give you a loan.

Ans: Neither did you ask me for a loan nor did I give you one.

 

b) i) I caught the ball at the boundary line.

ii) They lost the match.

Ans: As I caught the ball at the boundary line then they lost the match.

 

c) i) She ran very fast.

ii) She caught the chain snatcher.

Ans: She ran very fast to catch the chain snatcher.

 

Word formation:
Note that the suffix ‘-er’ combines with verbs to form nouns.
