1)  Read the given extracts to your partner and discuss the answers with him/her.

a) I’m writing this letter to you on a very important matter.

i) Who is writing the letter here?
Ans: Subhas Chandra Bose is writing the letter here.

Ans: Subhas Chandra Bose is writing the letter to Deshabandhu Chittaranjan Das.

 

iii) What is that very important matter?
Ans: The important matter is to know allotment of work to him in the great programme of National service.

 

b) “I want to quit the I.C.S.”
i) What was “I.C.S”?
Ans: I.C.S. was Indian Civil Services.

 

ii) Why did he want to quit the I.C.S?
Ans: He wanted to quit the I.C.S to join the freedom movement.

 

iii) When did he pass the I.C.S?
Ans: He passed I.C.S in August 1920.

 

c) “Booklets will be published in every provincial language?”
i) Who would publish these “booklets”?
Ans: The Propaganda Department would publish booklets.

 

ii) Why should the booklets be published in every provincial language?
Ans: The booklets should be published in every provincial language because the provincial languages would help to research on individual problems.

 

iii) Would people be asked to buy the booklets?
Ans: No, the people would not be asked to buy the booklets and they would be distributed free.

Ans: Subhas Chandra Bose thought it proper to give a detailed introduction of his family and himself to C.R. Das because he was a stranger and introduction would help Das to recognize him. 

 

b) What options did he have in his mind after quitting the I.C.S?
Ans: Subhas Chandra Bose wanted to teach at National College and to take up writing and publishing books and newspapers. He wanted to thrust into National Movement with fortitude.

 

c) How did the Civil Service Examination help him?
Ans: Civil Service Examination helped him to have all-round education up to a certain standard in Geography, Sanskrit, Law, English, Political Science and Economics.

 

d) Why didn’t he dare to write directly to C.R. Das? Who did he send his letter with?
Ans: He didn’t dare to write directly to C.R. Das because he was I.C.S. probationer and his letter would be censored. He sent his trusted friend with his letter.

a) Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack, Orissa on January 23, 1897. His mother was Prabhavati and his father was Janaki Nath Bose. One of his elder brothers, Mr. Sharath Chandra Bose was a famous lawyer.

 

b) Exactly how old was Subhas on the day he wrote this letter?
Ans: Subhas was 24 years, 1 month, 7days old when he wrote this letter.

 

c) His very first words in this letter are polite and respectful. (True / False)
