Little John and Robin Hood lose to the pedlar. Yet the ballad ends on a happy
note. Give reason.
Ans: Little John and Robin Hood were troublesome men; they challenged every person who passed through that forest. By chance they encountered with the bold pedlar who was passing from there with his pack on his back. Little John and Robin Hood both of them asked the pedlar what was in his pack. He said that there were several suits of the gay green silks, and silken bowstrings by two or three. Later both of them demanded the pedlar one half of his pack. But the bold pedlar refused to give them and pulled off his pack below his knee and took his sword and ready to fight with them. At first Little John fought with the pedlar until they both did sweat, John cried and prayed to stop fighting. Later Robin Hood attacked the bold pedlar and they fought until the blood flowed in streams at last Robin prayed to stop fighting. The pedlar said his name as Gamble Gold of the gay green woods and travelled far beyond the sea after killing a man in his father’s land. Robin Hood recognized him as his cousin. They covered the sword with friendly words and cracked their bottles most merrily.
